Installation Instructions: Symbio® 800 Controller
This document provides detailed instructions for installing, configuring, and operating the Trane Symbio® 800 Controller.
Introduction and Safety Information
Safety Warning: Only qualified personnel should install and service this equipment. Installation, startup, and servicing of HVAC equipment can be hazardous and requires specific knowledge and training. Improper installation or alteration by unqualified persons could result in death or serious injury. Always observe all precautions in the literature and on equipment tags, stickers, and labels.
Warnings, Cautions, and Notices
Read this manual thoroughly before operating or servicing. Safety advisories are provided throughout the manual.
- WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
- CAUTION: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury. It may also alert against unsafe equipment or property-damage only accidents.
- NOTICE: Indicates a situation that could result in equipment or property-damage only accidents.
Important Environmental Concerns
Trane advocates responsible refrigerant handling, including industry replacements for CFCs such as HCFCs and HFCs, due to their potential impact on the stratospheric ozone layer.
Important Responsible Refrigerant Practices
All technicians handling refrigerants must be certified according to local rules. In the USA, the Federal Clean Air Act (Section 608) sets requirements for handling, reclaiming, recovering, and recycling refrigerants and related equipment. Adhere to all applicable laws and local/municipal requirements.
Proper Field Wiring and Grounding Required!
WARNING: Failure to follow code could result in death or serious injury. All field wiring must be performed by qualified personnel. Improperly installed and grounded wiring poses fire and electrocution hazards. Follow NEC and local/state electrical codes for installation and grounding.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Required!
WARNING: Failure to wear proper PPE could result in death or serious injury. Technicians must wear appropriate PPE for potential electrical, mechanical, and chemical hazards, following manual instructions, tags, stickers, labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and OSHA guidelines. This includes cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, fall protection, electrical PPE, and arc flash clothing as required. For hazardous chemicals, consult SDS and OSHA/GHS guidelines. For electrical work, adhere to OSHA, NFPA 70E, or country-specific arc flash protection requirements before servicing.
Follow EHS Policies!
WARNING: Failure to follow instructions could result in death or serious injury. Trane personnel must follow company Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies for activities like hot work, electrical, fall protection, lockout/tagout, and refrigerant handling. Local regulations supersede company policies if more stringent. Non-Trane personnel should always follow local regulations.

Mounting the Symbio 800
The Symbio 800 controller mounts on a standard 35mm DIN rail.
Mounting Procedure
- Hook the device over the top of the DIN rail.
- Gently push on the lower half of the device in the direction of the arrow until the release clip clicks into place.
Removing or Repositioning the Device
- Disconnect all connectors before removing or repositioning.
- Insert a screwdriver into the slotted release clip and gently pry upward to disengage the clip.
- While holding tension on the clip, lift the device upward to remove or reposition.
- If repositioned, push on the device until the release clip clicks back into place to secure it on the DIN rail.
[Description of diagram: A diagram shows a slotted release clip on the back side of the controller.]
Powering Up the Symbio 800 Controller
The Symbio 800 controller powers up automatically when power is applied. No service button press is required. The factory-supplied ground wire must be connected from any chassis ground connection on the device to an appropriate earth ground.
Symbio 800 Power Supply Requirements
The preferred method of powering the Symbio 800 controller is via the PM014 power supply module, which provides 1.4 A max at 24 VDC at 70°C. Refer to the PM014 Power Supply IOM (BAS-SVX33-EN).
Any 24 VDC power supply can be used if it has sufficient power output. User-provided power supplies must provide power for three line cycles if AC power is interrupted to prevent reboots during short power losses.
Important: Powering the Symbio 800 from an XM70 or XM90 Expansion Module is not advised.
Power Draw Specifications
If the maximum operating temperature is 60°C or less, the current draw is 400mA at 24VDC, including up to 1000mA for the 5 Volt USB Host ports. At the maximum operating temperature of 70°C, the USB Host port current is limited to 500mA.
Temperature (°C) | 24 VDC Current (mA) | USB Rated Current (mA) |
---|---|---|
-40 to 60 | 400 | 1,000 |
60 to 70 | 300 | 500 |
Upon power-up, all LEDs illuminate, and the 7-segment display shows a sequence: 8, 7, 9, 5, 4, L, followed by a dancing dash pattern indicating normal operation. Refer to the Symbio 800 IOM, BAS-SVX080-EN, for more information on the 7-Segment Display.
