Overview

Moxa's NPort 5400 Series is a 4-port communication device designed to connect serial devices to an Ethernet network using TCP/IP. It supports RS-232 for the NPort 5410, RS-422/485 for the NPort 5430/5430I, and RS-232/422/485 for the NPort 5450/5450I. The NPort 5450-T and NPort 5450I-T models are specifically engineered for wide temperature environments.

The NPort 5400 Series is a Moxa Green Product, adhering to the RoHS directive of the European Parliament. This means it does not contain restricted substances such as cadmium, hexavalent chromium, lead, mercury, PBBs, or PBDEs.

NOTE: Please notify your sales representative if any of the above items are missing or damaged.
NOTE: The operating temperature of the power adapter (if applicable) included in the box is from 0 to 40°C. If your application requires operation outside this range, use a power adapter supplied by a UL Listed External Power Supply. The power output must meet SELV and LPS standards and be rated for 12 to 48 VDC with a minimum current of 92.4 mA.

Hardware Introduction

The NPort 5400 Series devices feature different serial port configurations:

  • NPort 5410: Equipped with 4 Male DB9 ports for RS-232 interface.
  • NPort 5430/5430I: Feature 4 5-pin terminal blocks for RS-422/485 interface.
  • NPort 5450/5450I: Include 4 Male DB9 ports for RS-232/422/485 interface.
Diagram Description (Page 3): Illustrates the front panels of NPort 5410/5450/5450I and NPort 5430/5430I. Both show a DC power jack input, an RJ45 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, a terminal block power input, the Moxa logo, an LCM display panel (on non-T models), indicator LEDs (Ready, Ethernet, P1-P4), and input buttons (MENU, SEL). The NPort 5430/5430I specifically shows RS-422/485 terminal blocks with pin labels: T+, T-, R+, R-, GND, D+, D-.
Diagram Description (Page 4): Shows the front panel of the NPort 5450-T/5450I-T, which is similar to the 5450/5450I but lacks the LCM display panel. It also details the Reset Button function and a table of LED indicators (Ready, Ethernet, P1-P4) with their respective colors and functions (e.g., Red Steady for power on, Green Blinking for location function, Orange/Green for Ethernet speed, Orange/Green for serial port activity).

Hardware Installation Procedure

  1. Step 1: After unpacking the NPort 5400, attach the power adapter.
  2. Step 2: Connect the NPort 5400 to your network. Use a standard straight-through Ethernet cable to connect to a Hub or Switch. For direct connection to a computer during setup or testing, use a crossover Ethernet cable.
  3. Step 3: Connect the NPort 5400's serial port to your serial device.
  4. Step 4: Placement Options:
    • Wall or Cabinet Mounting: The NPort 5400 includes two metal attachment plates. Attach these plates to the rear of the NPort using screws. Then, use screws to mount the NPort to a wall or inside a cabinet. Ensure screw heads are less than 6.0 mm in diameter and shafts are less than 3.5 mm in diameter.
    • DIN-Rail Mounting: DIN-rail attachments are available separately. When attaching to a DIN-rail, ensure the stiff metal springs are positioned at the top.
Diagram Description (Page 5): Illustrates the Wall Mount and DIN-Rail mounting configurations. It also shows the recommended screw dimensions for wall/cabinet mounting: screw head diameter less than 6.0 mm and shaft diameter less than 3.5 mm.

RS-485 Port Settings

Pull High/Low Resistors Setting

DIP switches located on the bottom of the NPort 5400 are used to configure the pull high/low resistor values for each serial port.

NOTE: The operating temperature of the power adapter in the box is from 0 to 40°C. If your application is out of this range, please use a power adapter supplied by a UL Listed External Power Supply. The power output meets SELV and LPS standards and is rated 12 to 48 VDC, with a minimum current of 0.73 A. Moxa offers power adapters with a wide temperature range (-40 to 75°C), such as the PWR-12150-(plug type)-SA-T series.

Software Installation Information

For NPort configuration, the default network settings are:

  • LAN: Static IP = 192.168.127.254; Netmask = 255.255.255.0

You can log in using the default credentials: Account: admin, Password: moxa. These credentials allow you to change settings to match your network topology or serial device parameters.

To use the Real COM mode, you must install the NPort's driver on your desktop. For additional resources like the user manual, drivers, and the Device Search Utility (DSU), please visit the Moxa support website at https://www.moxa.com/support/.
