How to Find Out if You Have 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi Network
Most routers are dual-band, supporting both 2.4G and 5G WiFi. Sometimes they use the same SSID (network name), and sometimes they have unique SSIDs like "YourWifi" and "YourWifi_5G". All eufySecurity devices operate on 2.4GHz WiFi networks only. This guide helps you connect your eufySecurity device to the correct 2.4GHz WiFi.
Look at Your Available Networks
- Open your WiFi menu on your phone or computer and check for multiple options with your WiFi's name (e.g., "home_wifi" and "home_wifi_5G", "2.4G home_wifi" and "home_wifi").
- If multiple similar names exist, choose the one with "2.4G" or no extra identifier. Avoid names with "5G" or "5GHz".
- If you cannot find these scenarios, follow the methods below to check Wi-Fi channels and network bands.
For Android Phone – Check the Frequency Band in the Wi-Fi Setting
On an Android phone, you can confirm the network band (2.4G or 5G) in the Wi-Fi frequency band settings. Steps:
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network.
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Select the connected network for details. (Note: Settings may vary by device.)
- Read the frequency band setting.
Example Wi-Fi Details:
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi: Technical standards: Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n), Signal strength: High, Security: WPA/WPA2 PSK, Connection speed: 144 Mbps, Frequency band: 2.4GHz
- 5GHz Wi-Fi: Technical standards: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), Signal strength: High, Security: WPA/WPA2 PSK, Connection speed: 866 Mbps, Frequency band: 5GHz
For iPhone - Install a WiFi Analyzer App
For iOS devices, there is no direct network band information in settings. It is recommended to use a computer or install a WiFi Analyzer app for analysis.
For Windows Computer – Check the Network Band in Wi-Fi Properties
- Connect to the WiFi network and open your network panel from the taskbar (Wi-Fi icon on the bottom right).
- Click on "Properties" of your connected network.
- Scroll down to the properties section in the new window.
- The "Network band" will indicate either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
Example Windows Network Properties:
SSID: MyHomeNetwork, Protocol: Wi-Fi, Security type: WPA2-Personal, Network band: 2.4 GHz
For MacBook Computers - Find Out the Channel Information of Your Wi-Fi
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network.
- Hold the "Option" key on your keyboard and click the Wi-Fi icon.
- Detailed information will appear in grey. The middle section will show the Wi-Fi channel being used.
- The channel information will state "2.4GHz" or "5GHz" in brackets.
Example macOS Wi-Fi Details:
Interface Name: en0, Address: 14:7d:da:2d:7f:7c, Channel: 6 (2.4 GHz, 20 MHz)
