Understanding Smoke Alarm Types

The photoelectric type alarms are generally more effective at detecting slow, smoldering fires which smolder for hours before bursting into flame. Sources of these fires may include cigarettes burning in couches or bedding.

The ionization type alarms are generally more effective at detecting fast, flaming fires which consume combustible materials rapidly and spread quickly. Sources of these fires may include flammable liquids or paper burning in a waste container.

Both types of alarms are designed to provide adequate detection of both types of fires. For the benefits of both systems, consider installing smoke alarms that combine both photoelectric and ionization sensing technologies.

Smoke Alarm Features

Important Safety Information

WARNING: This smoke alarm requires constant 120-volt AC power AND a working 9-volt battery to operate. It will NOT function if AC power is interrupted or the battery is removed, drained, or improperly connected.

Smoke Alarm Placement

Invensys Controls Americas recommends complete coverage by installing a smoke alarm in every room. The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) minimum requirement (Standard 72) states:

The NFPA also recommends additional detectors for areas separated by doors from required areas, including basements, bedrooms, dining rooms, furnace rooms, utility rooms, and hallways not otherwise protected.

The California State Fire Marshal recommends early warning detection in all rooms and areas, including sleeping areas, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, hallways, attics, furnace rooms, closets, utility rooms, basements, and attached garages.

For best protection, install a smoke alarm in every room. Interconnect all alarms.

DO NOT Install Smoke Alarms:

How to Install This Smoke Alarm

DANGER: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. Turn off power at the main fuse box or circuit breaker before installation.

WARNING: This smoke alarm should be installed only by a qualified electrician. Wiring must comply with Article 210 and 760 of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70) and local codes. Interconnect wire location must comply with NEC Article 300.3b. Installation must also comply with NFPA Standard 72.

  1. Install the smoke alarm on a 4-inch octagon or single gang junction box only.
  2. From the back of the smoke alarm, remove the mounting plate. To enable the tamper-resist feature later, twist out and set aside one of the molded pins on the plate.
  3. Align the plate's recessed slots with the mounting holes of the junction box.
  4. Gently pull household wires through the center hole of the plate.
  5. Secure the plate to the junction box using mounting screws.
  6. Connect the white wire from the connector plug to the white household wire using a wire connector.
  7. Connect the black wire from the connector plug to the black household wire.
  8. If interconnection is desired, connect the yellow wire from the connector to the interconnect wire between smoke alarms.
  9. (For single-station alarms): Cover the yellow wire with electrical tape and tuck it into the junction box.
  10. Lift open the battery pocket door.
  11. Connect a new 9-volt battery to the battery connector inside the pocket. Ensure it is securely connected. The alarm may beep briefly upon battery installation.
  12. Close the battery pocket door, snapping it into place. (For tamper-resist, use pliers to remove the thin plastic from the notch on the alarm's edge before closing).
  13. Attach the connector plug to the pins on the back of the smoke alarm. The plug fits only one way and will snap into place.
  14. Gently tug the connector to ensure it is securely attached.
  15. Position the smoke alarm onto the mounting plate and turn clockwise to lock it into place. To engage tamper-resist, insert the pin into the notch on the alarm's edge after it's properly positioned.
  16. Note: The alarm will not mount to the plate if the battery is not installed.
  17. Turn on power at the main fuse box or circuit breaker.
  18. Test the smoke alarm using the Push-to-Test button.

Interconnecting Smoke Alarms

Red and Green LED Indicators

LED Status Indication
Green LED Constant On AC power is present.
Off AC power is not present.
Red LED (Visible through Push-to-Test button) Indicates presence of a working battery.
Blinks once a second Smoke alarm senses smoke and sounds an audible alarm.
Blinks once every 10 seconds Smoke alarm is quieting an unwanted alarm (Model ADC only).
(Interconnected system only) Off Another smoke alarm in the network has sensed smoke and is signalling this alarm.

False Alarm Control (Model ADC)

Model ADC features a False Alarm Control that quiets unwanted alarms for up to 15 minutes. To use, press and release the test button during an unwanted alarm. The alarm should stop within ten seconds, indicating it is in False Alarm Control mode.

If the alarm does not enter False Alarm Control or resounds, the smoke level may be too high, requiring emergency action.

Testing the Smoke Alarm

WARNING: Test each smoke alarm after installation and periodically to ensure proper operation. Do not use open flames for testing.

Weekly Test Procedure:

  1. Observe the green LED: A constant green light indicates AC power is present.
  2. Firmly depress the Push-to-Test button for at least five (5) seconds. The alarm should sound three short beeps, followed by a 2-second pause, repeating. The alarm may sound for up to 10 seconds after releasing the button.
  3. For interconnected systems: All smoke alarms should sound within three seconds after the test button is pushed on the tested unit.
  4. If the alarm does not sound, turn off power, check wiring, and retest.

If the Push-to-Test function does not operate properly, replace or return the alarm for repair.

DANGER: If the alarm horn sounds when not being tested, the alarm is sensing smoke and requires immediate attention and action.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Perform yearly battery replacement and periodic cleaning to remove dust, dirt, and debris.

DANGER: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. Turn off power at the main service panel before replacing the battery or cleaning.

Repair

CAUTION: Do not attempt to repair this smoke alarm, as doing so will void your warranty.

If the smoke alarm is not operating properly, refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING section. If necessary and still under warranty, return the smoke alarm to Invensys Controls Americas, Product Service Department, 28C Leigh Fisher Blvd., El Paso, TX 79906, with a note describing the problem and proof of purchase.

If the alarm is out of warranty, have a licensed electrician replace it with a comparable Firex brand smoke alarm.

Practice Fire Safety

If the smoke alarm sounds and you are not testing it, it indicates a dangerous situation requiring immediate response. Develop and practice family escape plans.

What to Do in Case of a Fire

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Leave the building quickly. Feel doors for heat before opening; use an alternate exit if necessary. Crawl along the floor and do not stop to collect belongings.
  3. Meet at a pre-arranged outdoor meeting place.
  4. Call the fire department from outside the building.
  5. DO NOT go back inside a burning building. Wait for the fire department.

Following these guidelines can help in a fire. Practicing fire safety rules and preventing hazardous situations reduces the chance of fires starting.

Troubleshooting

DANGER: Always turn off power at the main fuse box or circuit breaker before troubleshooting.

WARNING: Do not disconnect battery or AC power to quiet an unwanted alarm; this removes protection. Fan air or open a window to remove smoke or dust.

Problem Solution
Smoke alarm does not sound when tested. (Note: Push test button for at least 5 seconds.) 1. Check that AC power is on.
2. Turn off power, remove alarm, check connector plug and battery attachment.
3. Clean smoke alarm.
LED blinks and alarm beeps simultaneously every 60 seconds. Battery is low – REPLACE IMMEDIATELY!
LED blinks and 30 seconds later alarm beeps – repeats at 60-second intervals. Unit inoperable. REPLACE OR RETURN FOR REPAIR IMMEDIATELY!
Smoke alarm beeps about once a minute. Turn off power and replace battery (see Maintenance and Cleaning).
Smoke alarm sounds unwanted alarms intermittently or during cooking/showers. 1. Clean smoke alarm.
2. Hire an electrician to move the smoke alarm to a new location (see Smoke Alarm Placement).
Interconnected smoke alarms do not sound when system is tested. Press and hold the test button for at least three seconds after the first unit sounds.
The alarm sounds different than expected (starts and stops). The alarm is operating correctly. This is the internationally recognized horn signal for evacuation: 3 short beeps, 2-second pause, repeating.

If the Push-to-Test function does not operate properly after following the procedures, see REPAIR on page 7.
