4. Setup

4.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage that may have occurred during transit. If any parts are missing or damaged, contact customer support immediately.

4.2 Choosing a Location

Place the sand filter pump on a firm, level surface, preferably concrete or a sturdy base, close to your pool. Ensure the location is well-ventilated and protected from direct sunlight and extreme weather conditions. The pump should be positioned below the pool's water level for optimal priming.

4.3 Filter Media Installation

This filter is compatible with 10 kg of filter sand or 300 g of filter balls. 200 g of filter balls are included as an initial quantity. You may need more depending on your pool size. Other filter media like filter glass can also be used.

  1. Remove the multi-port valve from the top of the filter tank.
  2. Cover the standpipe opening inside the tank to prevent filter media from entering it.
  3. Carefully pour the chosen filter media (sand or filter balls) into the tank. Ensure the tank is filled to the recommended level, typically indicated inside the tank or in the specific media instructions.
  4. Remove the standpipe cover and carefully reattach the multi-port valve, ensuring a tight seal.

4.4 Hose Connections

The pump includes 2-in-1 adapters for standard Ø32 mm (1 1/4") and Ø38 mm (1 1/2") hoses, making it suitable for most above-ground pools. A 45 cm, Ø32 mm hose is included for connecting the pump to the filter tank.

  1. Connect the pump outlet to the 'PUMP' port on the multi-port valve using the provided hose and clamps.
  2. Connect the pool's return line to the 'RETURN' port on the multi-port valve.
  3. Connect the pool's skimmer/suction line to the pump's inlet.
  4. Connect a waste hose to the 'WASTE' port if you plan to use the waste function.
  5. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free using the provided clamps and O-rings.

4.5 Priming the Pump

Before starting the pump, ensure it is primed to prevent dry running, which can cause damage.

  1. Ensure the pool is filled with water and the skimmer/suction line is submerged.
  2. Open any valves on the suction and return lines to allow water to flow to the pump.
  3. If the pump is above water level, you may need to manually fill the pump housing with water until it overflows.
  4. Once water is flowing freely to the pump, proceed to initial start-up.

4.6 Initial Start-up

After assembly and priming:

  1. Set the multi-port valve to the 'BACKWASH' position.
  2. Turn on the pump. Allow it to backwash for 2-3 minutes or until the water flowing out of the waste port is clear.
  3. Turn off the pump.
  4. Set the multi-port valve to the 'RINSE' position.
  5. Turn on the pump. Allow it to rinse for 30-60 seconds.
  6. Turn off the pump.
  7. Set the multi-port valve to the 'FILTER' position.
  8. The pump is now ready for normal operation.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 7-Way Multi-Port Valve Functions

The multi-port valve allows you to perform various functions for pool maintenance. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

Figure 5.1: The 7-way valve offers multiple modes for comprehensive pool maintenance.
  • FILTER: Normal filtration mode. Water is pumped through the filter media and returned to the pool.
  • BACKWASH: Reverses water flow through the filter to clean the filter media. Dirty water is directed to the waste port.
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to flush out any remaining dirt from the filter and settle the filter media. Water is directed to the waste port.
  • WASTE (DRAIN): Bypasses the filter and pumps water directly out of the pool to the waste port. Useful for lowering pool water level or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter and pump. Use this position only when the pump is off and you are performing maintenance on the pump or filter.
  • RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool. Useful for mixing chemicals without filtering.
  • WINTER: Used for winterizing the filter system. This position relieves pressure on the internal components of the valve during cold weather.

5.2 Using the Pressure Gauge

The integrated pressure gauge monitors the operating pressure of the sand filter. The initial pressure reading after a clean backwash should be noted as your 'clean' pressure. A rise in pressure (typically 0.5-1 bar above the clean pressure) indicates that the filter media is dirty and requires backwashing.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Regular Backwashing and Rinsing

Perform backwashing and rinsing when the pressure gauge indicates a rise in pressure or when the pool water appears cloudy. Refer to section 4.6 for the procedure.

6.2 Cleaning the Filter

Periodically, the filter media may require a deeper clean or replacement. Follow the filter media manufacturer's guidelines for replacement intervals. For filter balls, they can often be washed and reused.

6.3 Winterization

Before freezing temperatures arrive, it is crucial to properly winterize your sand filter pump to prevent damage.

  1. Disconnect the pump from the power supply.
  2. Drain all water from the pump and filter tank by opening the drain plugs.
  3. Disconnect all hoses.
  4. Set the multi-port valve to the 'WINTER' position to relieve pressure on the internal seals.
  5. Store the pump and filter in a dry, frost-free location.
