Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your Sobo AQ-500F Aquarium Internal Filter Pump. Please read these instructions carefully before installation and use to ensure proper function and longevity of the product. This filter is designed for maintaining clean and healthy aquatic environments in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
Safety Instructions
- Always disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance, installation, or handling of the filter unit.
- Ensure your hands are completely dry when plugging or unplugging the power cord to prevent electrical shock.
- Do not operate the filter if the power cord or plug is damaged. Contact a qualified technician for repair or replacement.
- This product is designed for indoor use only and must be fully submerged in water during operation.
- Ensure the power cord forms a 'drip loop' below the electrical outlet to prevent water from traveling along the cord to the outlet.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Package Contents
Carefully unpack all components and check for any damage. The package should contain the following items:
- 1 x Sobo AQ-500F Internal Filter Unit
- 1 x Filter Sponge (pre-installed)
- 1 x Intake Tube
- 1 x Power Cord (integrated)

Setup Instructions
- Unpack: Remove the filter unit and all accessories from the packaging.
- Assemble Intake Tube: Attach the provided intake tube securely to the designated inlet on the filter unit.
- Position in Aquarium: Place the filter unit inside your aquarium. Ensure it is fully submerged in water. The filter can be attached to the aquarium glass using the integrated suction cups (if present) for stability.
- Drip Loop: Arrange the power cord to create a 'drip loop' to prevent water from reaching the electrical outlet.
- Connect Power: Once the filter is securely positioned and fully submerged, plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet.

Operating Instructions
The Sobo AQ-500F filter is designed for continuous operation to maintain water quality. Once plugged in and fully submerged, the filter will immediately begin to draw water through the intake, pass it through the filter sponge, and return clean water to the aquarium.
- Ensure the water outlet is not obstructed to allow for proper water circulation.
- Monitor the water flow regularly to ensure optimal performance. A reduced flow rate may indicate the need for maintenance.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the efficient operation and longevity of your filter. Always disconnect the power before performing any maintenance.
- Disconnect Power: Unplug the filter from the electrical outlet.
- Remove Filter: Carefully remove the filter unit from the aquarium.
- Disassemble: Gently open the filter casing to access the filter sponge and impeller.
- Clean Filter Sponge: Remove the filter sponge. Rinse it thoroughly with old aquarium water (water removed during a water change) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Do not use tap water as chlorine can kill these bacteria.
- Clean Impeller: Inspect the impeller and its housing for any debris, such as plant matter or detritus. Clean these components with a small brush if necessary.
- Reassemble: Carefully reassemble the filter unit, ensuring all parts are correctly seated.
- Reinstall: Place the cleaned filter back into the aquarium, ensuring it is fully submerged, and then reconnect the power.
Frequency: It is recommended to clean the filter sponge every 2-4 weeks, depending on the bioload of your aquarium and water clarity.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Filter not starting | No power; Impeller jammed or dirty | Check power connection; Disconnect power, clean impeller and housing. |
| Low flow rate | Clogged filter sponge; Blocked intake tube; Impeller dirty | Clean filter sponge; Clear any blockages in the intake tube; Clean impeller. |
| Excessive noise/vibration | Foreign object in impeller; Impeller not seated correctly; Filter not securely mounted | Disconnect power, remove and clean impeller; Ensure impeller is correctly reinstalled; Securely mount the filter to the aquarium wall. |
| Water not clear | Filter sponge saturated; Filter too small for tank size/bioload | Clean or replace filter sponge; Consider increasing filtration capacity or reducing bioload. |
