4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of your MURNELAP sand filter:

  1. Site Selection: Choose a level, solid surface for the filter, preferably close to the pool/spa pump. Ensure adequate drainage and protection from direct sunlight or freezing temperatures.
  2. Verify Fit: Before proceeding, review the product's appearance in the photo and verify it against the specified dimensions to ensure a precise fit for your system.
  3. Sand Loading:
    • Remove the multi-port valve and cover from the filter tank.
    • Place a small amount of water in the bottom of the tank to cushion the laterals.
    • Carefully pour the recommended grade and amount of filter sand into the tank. Ensure the standpipe remains centered during this process.
  4. Multi-Port Valve Installation:
    • Clean the O-ring and O-ring groove on the multi-port valve. Lubricate with a silicone-based lubricant.
    • Carefully place the multi-port valve onto the filter tank, ensuring the standpipe aligns correctly with the valve opening.
    • Secure the valve to the tank using the provided clamp or bolts, tightening evenly.
  5. Plumbing Connections: Connect the plumbing from your pump to the "PUMP" port on the multi-port valve, and the return line to the "RETURN" port. Connect the "WASTE" port to a suitable drain line.
  6. Pressure Gauge Installation: Install the pressure gauge into the designated port on the multi-port valve.

5. Operating Instructions

The multi-port valve allows for various filter operations. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

  • FILTER: This is the normal operating position for filtering pool/spa water. Water flows through the sand bed, trapping debris, and returns to the pool/spa.
  • BACKWASH: Used for cleaning the filter sand. Water flows in reverse through the sand bed, dislodging trapped debris, and is discharged through the waste port. Backwash until the water runs clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush any remaining dirty water to waste. Run for 30-60 seconds.
  • WASTE/DRAIN: Bypasses the filter and sends water directly to the waste port. Useful for draining the pool/spa or vacuuming heavy debris directly to waste.
  • RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter and circulates water directly back to the pool/spa. Useful for chemical mixing without filtering.
  • CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter. Do not operate the pump with the valve in the CLOSED position.

After initial setup or backwashing, perform a backwash and rinse cycle to ensure optimal filtration.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficiency of your filter.

  • Backwashing: Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when water flow significantly decreases.
  • Sand Replacement: Filter sand typically needs to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Refer to the setup section for sand loading instructions.
  • Winterization: In cold climates, drain all water from the filter tank and plumbing to prevent freezing damage. Store the multi-port valve in a dry, protected area.
  • O-Ring Inspection: Periodically inspect the multi-port valve O-rings for cracks or wear. Replace if necessary and lubricate with silicone grease.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
High Pressure Gauge ReadingDirty filter sand; clogged skimmer/pump basket; restricted return lines.Backwash the filter; clean skimmer and pump baskets; check return lines for obstructions.
Low Water FlowDirty filter sand; clogged pump impeller; air leak in suction line; low water level in pool/spa.Backwash the filter; clean pump impeller; check for air leaks; ensure adequate water level.
Cloudy WaterInsufficient filtration time; dirty filter sand; improper water chemistry; worn-out sand.Increase filtration time; backwash filter; test and adjust water chemistry; consider replacing filter sand.
Water Leaking from ValveDamaged O-rings; loose connections.Inspect and replace O-rings; tighten all connections.
