1. Introduction
This instruction manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Generic Outboard Motor Safety Lanyard. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation. Keep this manual for future reference.
The safety lanyard is designed to act as an emergency stop for your outboard motor, enhancing safety on the water by automatically shutting off the engine if the operator is displaced from the helm.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in serious injury or death.
- Always ensure the safety lanyard is properly attached to both the motor's kill switch and the operator before starting the engine.
- Never operate the boat without the safety lanyard securely fastened.
- Regularly inspect the lanyard for any signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Replace immediately if any damage is found.
- Ensure the lanyard's length allows for free movement of the operator without accidental disengagement, but is short enough to activate the kill switch if the operator falls overboard.
- Do not modify the safety lanyard or its components.
- Keep the lanyard clean and free from debris.
3. Product Overview and Components
The Generic Outboard Motor Safety Lanyard consists of a retractable coiled cord, a rotating carabiner, and a set of interchangeable keys designed to fit various outboard motor kill switches.

Key Components:
- Retractable Coiled Cord: A red, flexible cord made of waxed rope and PU material, designed to extend and retract without tangling. Maximum extended length is 1.4 meters (55.12 inches).
- Rotating Carabiner: A black, durable clip for attaching the lanyard to the operator's clothing or life vest. Its rotating design helps prevent tangles.
- Interchangeable Keys: A set of 7 different plastic keys designed to fit various outboard motor kill switch types. These keys are attached to the other end of the coiled cord.

4. Setup and Installation
- Select the Correct Key: Identify the appropriate key from the provided set that matches your outboard motor's kill switch control box. The lanyard includes 7 different key types to ensure compatibility with various models.
- Attach to Motor: Securely insert the selected key into the kill switch receptacle on your outboard motor's control panel. Ensure it is firmly seated and will not easily dislodge under normal operating conditions.
- Attach to Operator: Clip the rotating carabiner end of the lanyard to a secure point on your clothing or life vest. This should be a location that allows for comfortable movement but will pull the key from the kill switch if you are unexpectedly separated from the helm.

5. Operating Instructions
Once the safety lanyard is properly installed and attached, operate your boat as usual. The lanyard is designed to function as follows:
- When the operator is at the helm, the coiled cord will remain extended, allowing for normal operation.
- In the event that the operator is thrown from the helm or falls overboard, the tension on the lanyard will pull the key from the motor's kill switch.
- Upon removal of the key, the motor's ignition system will immediately shut off, causing the boat to slow down and stop. This prevents the boat from becoming a runaway vessel and reduces the risk of further injury or accidents.

6. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and reliable performance of your safety lanyard, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Regular Inspection: Before each use, visually inspect the entire lanyard, including the coiled cord, carabiner, and keys, for any signs of cuts, fraying, cracks, corrosion, or other damage.
- Cleaning: After use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the lanyard with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and other debris. Allow it to air dry completely before storage.
- Storage: Store the lanyard in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and harsh chemicals. Avoid kinking or excessively stretching the coiled cord during storage.
- Replacement: If any part of the lanyard shows signs of significant wear or damage, replace the entire unit immediately. Do not attempt to repair damaged components.
7. Troubleshooting
This product is a simple mechanical safety device. Most issues can be resolved by proper inspection and installation.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine does not stop when lanyard is pulled. | Key not properly inserted into kill switch. Kill switch malfunction. Lanyard cord is broken or excessively stretched. | Ensure key is fully seated. Inspect kill switch for damage; consult motor manual or qualified technician. Replace lanyard immediately. |
| Lanyard frequently detaches accidentally. | Carabiner not securely clipped. Lanyard too long for operator's position.
