Setup and Installation

This section outlines the general procedure for replacing deck wheels. Specific steps may vary depending on your mower model. Always refer to your mower's service manual for precise instructions.

  1. Prepare the Mower:
    • Park the mower on a flat, stable surface.
    • Turn off the engine, remove the ignition key, and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
    • If necessary, raise the mower deck to access the wheels. Use appropriate lifting equipment and secure the mower with jack stands or blocks.
  2. Remove Old Deck Wheels:
    • Locate the existing deck wheels. They are typically attached to the mower deck with a bolt and nut.
    • Using appropriate wrenches, loosen and remove the nut securing the old wheel.
    • Carefully remove the bolt, spacer (if present), and the old deck wheel. Note the order of components for reassembly.
    • Inspect the mounting area for any damage or wear.
  3. Install New Caltric Deck Wheels:
    • Position a new Caltric deck wheel in the mounting bracket.
    • Insert the provided bolt through the bracket, the wheel, and any necessary spacers. Ensure the spacer is correctly positioned between the wheel and the bracket to allow free rotation.
    • Thread the new nut onto the bolt.
    • Tighten the nut securely with wrenches. Do not overtighten, as this can restrict wheel movement or damage components. The wheel should spin freely but without excessive wobble.
  4. Repeat for All Wheels: Install all remaining deck wheels following the same procedure.
  5. Final Check:
    • Once all wheels are installed, lower the mower (if it was raised).
    • Reconnect the spark plug wire.
    • Test the mower's deck height adjustment to ensure the new wheels function correctly and the deck is level.

Operating

Caltric Deck Wheels are designed to assist in maintaining a consistent cutting height and preventing the mower deck from scalping the lawn or digging into uneven terrain. Once installed, they operate passively as part of your mower's deck system. Ensure your mower deck is properly leveled according to your mower's manufacturer guidelines for optimal performance and even cutting.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your deck wheels will extend their lifespan and ensure optimal mower performance.

  • Regular Cleaning: After each use, clean any grass clippings, dirt, or debris from around the deck wheels and their mounting points. Accumulated debris can hinder rotation and cause premature wear.
  • Inspect for Wear: Periodically inspect the wheels for signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Replace any severely worn or damaged wheels promptly.
  • Check Fasteners: Ensure all bolts and nuts securing the deck wheels are tight. Loose fasteners can lead to excessive wear or loss of the wheel.
  • Lubrication (if applicable): While these plastic wheels typically do not require lubrication, if your mower's original design included grease fittings for the deck wheels, ensure they are greased according to your mower's manual.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your deck wheels, consider the following common problems and solutions:

  • Wheel Not Spinning Freely:
    • Check for debris lodged around the wheel or axle.
    • Ensure the mounting bolt is not overtightened. Loosen slightly if necessary.
    • Verify that the spacer (if used) is correctly positioned and not binding the wheel.
  • Excessive Wobble:
    • Tighten the mounting nut.
    • Inspect the wheel and mounting bracket for damage or wear that could cause looseness.
  • Premature Wear:
    • Ensure the mower deck is properly leveled. An uneven deck can put undue stress on certain wheels.
    • Check for consistent cutting height. If the deck is too low, the wheels will experience more friction and wear.
    • Regularly clean debris from around the wheels.
