3.2 Spooling Fishing Line

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Hold the line under tension and begin reeling slowly, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch from the rim.

3.3 Handle Installation

The reel features an ambidextrous handle. To change the handle side:

  1. Unscrew the handle knob on the desired side.
  2. Remove the handle shaft.
  3. Insert the handle shaft into the opposite side of the reel body.
  4. Secure the handle knob on the new side.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Adjusting the Drag System

Your Sougayilang reel is equipped with both front and rear drag systems for precise control during a fight.

  • Front Drag: Located on the top of the spool. Turn clockwise to increase drag tension, counter-clockwise to decrease. Adjust this before fishing to match your line strength and target species.
  • Rear Drag System: Located at the back of the reel. This system allows for quick adjustments to the free spool tension. Push up for rear brake, push down for front brake. Adjust the knob to set how loose or tight the free spool is.

4.2 Casting

  1. Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
  2. Press the line against the rod with your index finger.
  3. Open the bail arm.
  4. Swing the rod forward, releasing the line with your finger at the desired point in the cast.
  5. Close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle to prepare for retrieval.

4.3 Retrieval

Turn the handle clockwise to retrieve the line. The precise transmission system ensures smooth and consistent line retrieval.

4.4 Anti-Reverse Switch

The reel features an instant anti-reverse bearing. A switch, typically located at the bottom of the reel body, allows you to engage or disengage the anti-reverse function. When engaged, the handle will only turn forward, preventing backward movement. When disengaged, the handle can turn both ways, allowing line to be given out without opening the bail.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will extend the life and performance of your Sougayilang fishing reel.

5.1 Cleaning After Use

  1. After each use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the reel with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and debris. Do not submerge the reel.
  2. Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.

5.2 Lubrication

Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle shaft, bail arm pivot points, and line roller. Use reel grease for gears if disassembling for deeper cleaning (recommended only for experienced users).

5.3 Storage

Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a reel cover to protect it from dust and scratches.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your reel, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Stiff Handle/Rough Retrieval: This can be caused by dirt or lack of lubrication. Clean the reel thoroughly and apply appropriate reel oil to moving parts.
  • Line Twists: Ensure you are spooling line correctly. Avoid overfilling the spool. Check the line roller for smooth rotation; if it's seized, clean or replace it.
  • Drag Slipping or Sticking: Clean the drag washers. Ensure they are properly seated and lubricated with appropriate drag grease if necessary. Do not overtighten the drag when storing.
  • Bail Not Closing Properly: Check for any obstructions or bent components in the bail mechanism. Ensure the bail spring is functioning correctly.
