BST BSSP Heavy Duty Rear Upper and Lower Control Arm Installation Manual

For Jeep Gladiator JT (2019+)

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of the BST BSSP Heavy Duty Rear Upper and Lower Control Arm Kit. This kit is specifically designed for Jeep Gladiator JT models manufactured from 2019 onwards, and is compatible with vehicles equipped with a 2-5 inch lift kit.

The control arms are engineered to optimize caster and axle positioning on lifted vehicles, utilizing the factory mounting locations for a precise fit. Adherence to these instructions will ensure correct functionality and longevity of the product.

2. Product Features

  • Heavy Duty Construction: Manufactured from powder-coated solid carbon steel for enhanced durability and resistance to corrosion.
  • Adjustability: Features 1-1/4"-12 threads, providing significant strength and fine-tune adjustability for precise suspension geometry.
  • Polyurethane Bushings: Equipped with polyurethane bushings at the non-adjustable ends for quiet operation and reduced maintenance.
  • Improved Clearance: CNC formed design ensures proper clearance for tires, frame, and axle mounts.
  • Enhanced Articulation: Designed to allow for greater articulation, improving off-road performance.
  • Rebuildable Ends: Carbon steel ends are fully rebuildable and greaseable for extended service life.

3. What's in the Box

4. Setup and Installation

Estimated Installation Time: Approximately 1-2 hours.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands or a lift before beginning work.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves.
  • It is recommended that installation be performed by a qualified professional.
  • Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific torque specifications for all fasteners.

Installation Steps:

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  2. Safely lift the rear of the vehicle and support it using jack stands under the frame. Allow the axle to hang freely.
  3. Carefully remove the factory rear upper and lower control arms. Note the orientation of the original arms for reference.
  4. Install the new BST BSSP rear upper and lower control arms into the factory mounting locations. Do not fully tighten hardware at this stage.
  5. Adjust the length of the adjustable control arms as needed to achieve desired caster and axle positioning. The 1-1/4"-12 threads allow for fine-tuning.
  6. Once the desired length and positioning are achieved, fully tighten all control arm hardware to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque values.
  7. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  8. After installation, it is critical to have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure proper vehicle handling and prevent premature tire wear.

5. Operating Considerations

Once installed and properly aligned, these control arms will contribute to maintaining correct suspension geometry on your lifted Jeep Gladiator JT. This is particularly important for vehicles used in off-road conditions, as it helps preserve handling characteristics and component longevity.

The design allows for increased articulation, which is beneficial for navigating uneven terrain. Always operate your vehicle within its design limits and be aware of changes in handling characteristics after suspension modifications.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the performance and lifespan of your BST BSSP control arms.

  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all control arms, bushings, and mounting hardware for signs of wear, damage, or looseness. This should be done during routine vehicle maintenance or after severe off-road use.
  • Greasing: The carbon steel ends are greaseable. Apply appropriate grease to these points at regular intervals (e.g., every oil change or 5,000 miles) to ensure smooth operation and prevent premature wear.
  • Fastener Torque: Re-check the torque of all mounting bolts periodically. Loose fasteners can lead to noise, premature wear, and unsafe driving conditions. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific torque values.
  • Bushing Condition: Inspect polyurethane bushings for cracks, tears, or excessive play. Replace worn bushings to maintain optimal performance and prevent noise.

7. Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseSolution
Noise (clunking, squeaking) from suspensionLoose mounting hardware, worn bushings, insufficient greasing of rebuildable ends.Inspect and re-torque all fasteners. Grease rebuildable ends. Inspect and replace worn bushings.
