1. Attaching the Handle

1. Identify the handle shaft and the corresponding threaded opening on the reel body.
2. Insert the handle shaft into the opening. Note that the handle may be reverse-threaded; turn counter-clockwise to tighten if necessary.
3. Ensure the handle is securely fastened and has no play.

2. Spooling Fishing Line

1. Open the bail arm.
2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot. The Kestrel SE spool is braid-ready, meaning it has a textured surface to prevent braided line from slipping.
3. Close the bail arm.
4. Hold the line under slight tension and begin reeling slowly, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool.
5. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch from the rim to prevent tangles and maximize casting distance.

3. Mounting the Reel to a Rod

1. Loosen the reel seat on your fishing rod.
2. Place the reel foot into the reel seat.
3. Tighten the reel seat securely until the reel is firmly attached to the rod.

Casting Techniques

1. Hold the rod with the reel beneath your hand.
2. Use your index finger to hold the line against the rod.
3. Open the bail arm with your other hand.
4. Bring the rod back over your shoulder, then swiftly cast forward, releasing the line with your index finger at the desired point.
5. Close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle after the lure hits the water.

Retrieving Line

Turn the handle clockwise to retrieve the line. Maintain a consistent retrieve speed suitable for your lure and fishing conditions. The smooth gearing of the Kestrel SE ensures effortless retrieval.

Adjusting the Drag

The drag system is located on the front of the spool. Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Adjust the drag to match the breaking strength of your line and the size of the fish you are targeting. A properly set drag allows line to be pulled out when a fish pulls hard, preventing line breakage.

Cleaning Your Reel

• After each use, especially in saltwater environments, rinse the reel with fresh water to remove salt, dirt, and debris. Do not submerge the reel.
• Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
• Use a cotton swab to clean hard-to-reach areas.

Lubrication

• Periodically apply a small amount of fishing reel oil to moving parts such as the bail arm pivot points and handle shaft.
• Apply a thin layer of fishing reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear if performing a deeper cleaning. Refer to the included exploded parts diagram for component identification.
• Avoid over-lubricating, as this can attract dirt and hinder performance.

Storage

• Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
• Consider using a reel cover or case to protect it from dust and physical damage.

Line Twists or Kinks

• Cause: Improper spooling, using lures that spin, or retrieving against a strong current.
• Solution: Re-spool the line correctly. Use swivels with spinning lures. Periodically let out all your line behind a boat or in a current to allow it to untwist.

Sticking Drag

• Cause: Dirt, corrosion, or worn drag washers.
• Solution: Clean the drag washers and apply a light coat of drag grease. If the issue persists, consider replacing the drag washers. The sealed spool design helps prevent moisture intrusion, but regular checks are still recommended.

Rough Retrieval

• Cause: Lack of lubrication, dirt in gears, or damaged components.
• Solution: Clean and lubricate the gears and bearings. If the problem continues, inspect for damaged parts and consider professional servicing.
