Setup
1. Battery Installation
The LKAHYUIBC SH201 requires a 9V battery (not included) for operation. To install the battery:
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
- Insert a new 9V battery, ensuring the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals align correctly with the markings inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Note: Always use fresh batteries for optimal performance. Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the LCD screen.
2. Initial Power On and Calibration
Before each use, especially when changing modes or moving to a new scanning area, the device needs to be calibrated.
- Press the Power Button (refer to Figure 2) to turn on the device. The LCD screen will illuminate.
- Place the detector flat against the wall or surface you intend to scan, ensuring there are no objects or your hand directly under the sensor area.
- Press and hold the Power Button (or a dedicated calibration button if present, though typically it's the power button for initial calibration) until the calibration process completes. The display will show a clear indication, such as "CALIBRATING" or a series of dashes, before settling to a ready state.
- Release the button. The device is now calibrated and ready for use in the selected mode.
Important: Calibration must be performed on a surface free of studs, metal, or AC wires to ensure accurate readings.
Operating Instructions
The SH201 features multiple scanning modes for different detection needs.
1. Selecting a Mode
Press the Mode Switch Button (refer to Figure 2) to cycle through the available detection modes:
- Stud Scan Mode: Detects the edges and center of wood and metal studs up to 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep.
- Deep Scan Mode: Detects wood and metal studs up to 3 inches (76 mm) deep.
- Metal Scan Mode: Detects ferrous and non-ferrous metals up to 4.7 inches (120 mm) deep.
- AC Wire Scan Mode: Detects live unshielded AC wires up to 2 inches (51 mm) deep.
The selected mode will be indicated on the LCD display.
2. Scanning Procedure
- Place and Calibrate: After selecting the desired mode, place the detector flat against the surface to be scanned. Ensure it is calibrated as described in the Setup section.
- Move Slowly: Slowly slide the detector horizontally across the surface. Maintain full contact with the wall. Do not lift or tilt the device during scanning.
- Observe the Display:
- As the detector approaches a target, the signal strength bars on the LCD will increase.
- The Moving Direction Indicator will guide you towards the center of the object.
- When the center of a stud or metal object is detected, the "CENTER" indicator will appear, and an audible alarm will sound.
- In AC Wire Scan Mode, the AC Wire Warning icon will illuminate when live AC wires are detected.
- Mark the Location: Once the center of an object is found, mark its location with a pencil. Continue scanning past the object to confirm its edges.
- Verify: For critical applications, scan the area from multiple directions (e.g., top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top) to confirm the object's position and minimize errors.

Figure 3: The SH201 demonstrating precise positioning, indicating the depth of a detected object (e.g., 24.5mm).
Caution: Always turn off power to the area you are working on before drilling or cutting into walls, even after using the detector. The detector may not detect all live AC wires, especially if they are shielded or in conduit.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your LKAHYUIBC SH201 Wall Detector.
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the device is dry before storage.
- Storage: Store the detector in a dry, dust-free environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Battery: Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.
- Avoid Impact: Protect the device from drops and impacts, which can affect its internal components and calibration.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly installed battery. | Check battery orientation. Replace with a new 9V battery. |
| Inaccurate readings or false positives. | Improper calibration; moisture in wall; nearby electrical interference. | Recalibrate on a clear section of the wall. Ensure the wall is dry. Move away from other electronic devices. |
| Cannot detect objects in Deep Scan mode. | Wall material too dense; object too deep. | Ensure you are in Deep Scan mode. Scan slowly and carefully. Some materials may limit detection depth. |
| AC Wire Warning is always on. | High humidity; static electricity; large metallic objects nearby. | Recalibrate. Move to a different area. Ensure hands are not touching the sensor area. |
