3. Setup and Connection

The Generic Portable SSD SHL-R320 is designed for plug-and-play functionality with compatible systems. No prior formatting is required as each drive is checked before shipping.

  1. Connect the USB Cable: Take the provided USB 3.0 Type-C to USB-A cable. Insert the Type-C end into the port on the Portable SSD.
  2. Connect to Computer: Insert the USB-A end of the cable into an available USB 3.0 port on your desktop computer or laptop. For optimal and fastest data transfer speeds, ensure you connect to a USB 3.0 port (often colored blue internally).
  3. System Recognition: Your Windows operating system (Windows 7, 10, or 11) should automatically detect and install the necessary drivers for the SSD. This process may take a few moments.
  4. Accessing the Drive: Once recognized, the drive will appear as a new storage device in "This PC" or "My Computer." You can now access it like any other hard drive.

Note: The drive is pre-formatted and ready for immediate use. No additional software installation is required.

4. Operating Instructions

Using your Portable SSD for data transfer is straightforward:

  • Transferring Files: To copy files to the SSD, simply drag and drop them from your computer's folders to the SSD's drive icon or an open folder on the SSD. Similarly, to copy files from the SSD to your computer, drag and drop them from the SSD to your desired location on the computer.
  • Creating Folders: You can create new folders on the SSD to organize your data, just as you would on your computer's internal drives.
  • Safe Removal: Always safely remove the hardware before disconnecting the SSD from your computer. In Windows, click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the system tray (usually near the clock), then select the Portable SSD and wait for the "Safe to Remove Hardware" notification.

Important: Disconnecting the drive without safely ejecting it can lead to data corruption or loss.

5. Maintenance and Care

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Portable SSD, follow these guidelines:

  • Physical Protection: While the SSD has a durable metal housing, avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Environmental Conditions: Keep the drive away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the drive. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Data Backup: Regularly back up important data stored on the SSD to another location to prevent data loss from unforeseen circumstances.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Solution
Drive not detected by computer.
  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the SSD and a USB port on your computer.
  • Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.
  • Test the drive with a different USB cable, if available.
  • Restart your computer and try connecting again.
  • Check Device Manager in Windows to see if the drive is listed (it might appear as an unknown device).
Slow data transfer speeds.
  • Ensure the drive is connected to a USB 3.0 port on your computer. USB 2.0 ports will result in significantly slower speeds.
  • Close any unnecessary applications running in the background that might be consuming system resources.
  • Verify the source drive (your computer's internal drive) is also capable of high-speed data transfer.
Files disappear or become corrupted.
  • Always use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option before disconnecting the drive.
  • Ensure the drive is not being disconnected during active data transfer.
  • Run a disk check utility (e.g., CHKDSK in Windows) on the drive to identify and repair potential errors.
  • If issues persist, consider backing up data and reformatting the drive (this will erase all data).
