FICEMETOI Hu-017A/Hu-017B Raydio Kit FM Radio DIY Instruction Manual

Model: Hu-017A / Hu-017B

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the assembly, setup, operation, and maintenance of the FICEMETOI Hu-017A/Hu-017B Raydio Kit. This electronic DIY kit allows users to build a functional FM radio receiver (87-108MHz) with an RDA5807S chip, housed in a protective case. Please read all instructions carefully before beginning assembly.

2. Safety Information

  • Always work in a well-ventilated area when soldering.
  • Use appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses, to protect against solder splashes and fumes.
  • Ensure the soldering iron is placed on a heat-resistant stand when not in use.
  • Avoid touching the hot tip of the soldering iron.
  • Keep electronic components away from water and moisture.
  • The kit operates on DC 3-5V. Do not exceed the specified voltage to prevent damage to components.
  • Keep small components out of reach of children to prevent choking hazards.

3. Package Contents

Before starting assembly, verify that all components listed below are present in your kit. Refer to the image for visual identification of typical components.

4. Assembly Instructions

Follow these steps carefully to assemble your Raydio Kit. A basic understanding of soldering is recommended.

4.1. Component Soldering

  1. Prepare your workspace: Ensure a clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated area. Gather your soldering iron, solder, desoldering braid (optional), and safety glasses.
  2. Identify components: Match each component from the package contents list to its corresponding footprint on the PCB. Resistors often have color codes, and capacitors have values printed on them.
  3. Solder smaller components first: Begin with low-profile components like resistors, diodes, and ceramic capacitors. Insert them into their designated holes on the PCB, bend the leads slightly to hold them in place, and solder each lead from the underside of the board. Trim excess leads after soldering.
  4. Install integrated circuits (ICs): Carefully align the notch or dot on the IC with the corresponding marking on the PCB. Solder each pin securely. Consider using IC sockets if provided or preferred for easier replacement.
  5. Solder larger components: Proceed with electrolytic capacitors (observe polarity, the longer lead is usually positive), push buttons, potentiometers, and the 7-segment LED display.
  6. Mount the RDA5807S module: Carefully place the FM radio module onto its designated pins or footprint and solder it.
  7. Solder connectors: Attach the audio jacks, DC power jack, and antenna connector to their respective positions.
  8. Inspect all solder joints: Visually check for cold solder joints (dull, lumpy appearance), solder bridges (solder connecting two adjacent pads), and ensure all components are firmly attached.

4.2. Case Assembly

Once all electronic components are soldered to the PCB, assemble the acrylic case.

  1. Remove protective film: Peel off the protective film from both sides of all acrylic case pieces.
  2. Mount the PCB: Secure the assembled PCB to the bottom acrylic panel using the provided standoffs and screws. Ensure all connectors and controls align with the cutouts in the case.
  3. Assemble side panels: Carefully interlock or screw the side panels into place, ensuring the antenna, power jack, and audio jacks protrude through their respective openings.
  4. Attach top panel: Place the top acrylic panel, ensuring the LED display and buttons align correctly. Secure with screws.
  5. Install antenna: Screw the telescopic antenna into its connector on the case.

5. Setup

  1. Power Connection: Connect the provided USB power cable to the DC 3-5V input jack on the Raydio Kit. Plug the other end into a compatible USB power source (e.g., a USB wall adapter, power bank, or computer USB port).
  2. Antenna Extension: Extend the telescopic antenna fully for optimal FM reception.
  3. Audio Output: Connect headphones or external speakers to the 3.5mm audio output jack if desired.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Power On/Off

The kit typically powers on automatically when connected to a power source. Some versions may include a power button; refer to your specific PCB layout if present.

6.2. Tuning

  • Use the designated tuning buttons (often labeled "+" and "-") to scan for FM radio stations.
  • The 7-segment LED display will show the current frequency (e.g., "101.5" for 101.5 MHz).
  • Some kits may feature an auto-scan function, typically activated by holding down a tuning button.

6.3. Volume Control

Adjust the volume using the rotary potentiometer (knob) on the PCB or case. Rotate clockwise to increase volume and counter-clockwise to decrease it.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the acrylic case. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Component Care: Ensure the kit is kept in a dry environment to prevent corrosion of electronic components.
  • Antenna: Handle the telescopic antenna gently to avoid bending or breaking.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No power / Display offIncorrect power connection, faulty power source, reversed power polarity (if applicable), cold solder joint on power input.Check USB cable and power adapter. Ensure power source is providing 3-5V DC. Inspect solder joints around the DC jack and power regulation components.
No sound / Weak soundHeadphones/speakers not connected or faulty, volume too low, poor reception, faulty audio amplifier component, cold solder joint on audio output.Check headphone/speaker connection and functionality. Increase volume. Extend antenna fully. Try tuning to a stronger station. Inspect audio circuit solder joints.
Poor reception / StaticAntenna not extended, weak signal area, interference, faulty antenna connection, cold solder joint on RDA5807S module.Extend antenna fully. Move to an area with better FM signal. Avoid sources of electromagnetic interference. Inspect antenna connection and RDA5807S module solder joints.
Buttons unresponsiveCold solder joint on button, button stuck, incorrect button wiring.Inspect solder joints for the unresponsive button. Ensure buttons are not physically obstructed by the case.
