4. Tools Required

The following tools are typically needed for this replacement:

  • Adjustable Wrench or Pliers
  • Screwdriver (Phillips or Flathead, depending on handle screw)
  • Rag or Towel
  • Bucket (for catching residual water)
  • Thread Seal Tape (PTFE tape) - optional, but recommended for packing nut threads

5. Installation Instructions

5.1. Preparation

  1. Turn off the main water supply to your house. Locate the main shut-off valve, usually in the basement, utility room, or near the water meter.
  2. Open a faucet inside your house (preferably on a lower level) to drain the water from the pipes and relieve pressure.
  3. Open the outdoor sillcock you are working on to drain any remaining water.

5.2. Removing the Old Stem Assembly

  1. Using a screwdriver, remove the screw holding the handle to the sillcock stem. Carefully pull the handle off.
  2. Locate the packing nut (also known as the bonnet nut) at the base of the stem, just above the sillcock body.
  3. Using an adjustable wrench or pliers, carefully turn the packing nut counter-clockwise to loosen and remove it. Be prepared for a small amount of residual water to drip out.
  4. Once the packing nut is removed, you should be able to pull the entire stem assembly straight out of the sillcock body. If it's stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling.

5.3. Installing the New Stem Assembly

  1. Inspect the new Homewerks VACREPG8 Stem Assembly. Ensure the washer/gasket is properly seated at the end of the stem.
  2. Carefully insert the new stem assembly into the sillcock body. Push it in until it is fully seated.
  3. Thread the packing nut back onto the sillcock body, turning it clockwise by hand until snug.
  4. Using an adjustable wrench, tighten the packing nut an additional quarter to half turn. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the packing or make the handle difficult to turn.
  5. Reattach the handle to the stem and secure it with the screw.

6. Operating and Testing

  1. Slowly turn the main water supply back on.
  2. Check the sillcock and surrounding area for any leaks. If a leak is present around the packing nut, try tightening it slightly more (a small turn at a time) until the leak stops. Do not overtighten.
  3. Turn the sillcock handle to the "ON" position to ensure water flows freely.
  4. Turn the handle to the "OFF" position and confirm that the water flow stops completely.
  5. Close any other faucets that were opened to relieve pressure.

7. Maintenance

  • Periodically check the sillcock for any signs of leaks, especially after freezing temperatures.
  • Ensure the sillcock is fully closed when not in use to prevent unnecessary wear on the stem assembly.
  • In freezing climates, disconnect hoses from the sillcock before winter to allow it to drain properly and utilize its frost-free feature.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Water leaks from around the handle/stem.Loose packing nut or worn packing washer.Gently tighten the packing nut. If the leak persists, the packing washer may need replacement (though a new stem assembly should have a fresh one).
Water continues to drip from the spout when closed.Damaged or improperly seated washer at the end of the stem.Ensure the new stem assembly is fully seated and the washer is intact. If the issue persists, the sillcock body itself might be damaged or corroded.
Handle is difficult to turn.Overtightened packing nut.Slightly loosen the packing nut until the handle turns smoothly, then check for leaks.
