  2. Inspect the instrument for any signs of damage that may have occurred during shipping.
  3. Ensure all included accessories, such as the hard case, are present.

3.2 Connecting to an Amplifier

  1. Connect one end of a standard 6.35mm instrument cable to the output jack located on the side of the bass guitar.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the input jack of your bass amplifier.
  3. Ensure your amplifier's volume is set to a low level before powering it on.

Before playing, tune your bass guitar. Standard tuning for a 4-string bass is E-A-D-G (from thickest to thinnest string).

  • Use an electronic tuner for accuracy.
  • Turn the Hipshot USA Ultralite tuning machines slowly to adjust the pitch of each string.

4. Operating the Bass Guitar

4.1 Controls Overview

The P10dx features a versatile control layout for sound shaping:

  • Volume Knob: Controls the overall output level of the bass.
  • Tone Knob: Adjusts the treble frequencies in passive mode.
  • Pickup Blend Knob: Blends the output between the neck (P-style) and bridge (J-style) pickups.
  • Active/Passive Switch: Toggles between active (preamp engaged) and passive (preamp bypassed) modes. In active mode, the EQ controls are functional.
  • Treble/Bass EQ Knobs: Boosts or cuts treble and bass frequencies in active mode.
  • Middle Frequency Control (MFC) Knob: In active mode, this knob allows you to select the center frequency for the middle EQ band.
  • Middle EQ Knob: Boosts or cuts the middle frequencies at the selected MFC point.

4.2 Using the Marcus Heritage-3 Preamp

The Heritage-3 preamp provides extensive tonal flexibility. To engage the preamp, ensure the Active/Passive switch is in the active position. The Treble, Middle, and Bass EQ knobs, along with the Middle Frequency Control, will then become active. Experiment with these controls to find your desired sound.

Note: The active preamp requires a 9V battery. Refer to the Maintenance section for battery replacement instructions.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

  • Wipe down the body, neck, and strings with a soft, clean cloth after each use to remove sweat and grime.
  • For deeper cleaning, use guitar-specific cleaning and polishing products. Avoid harsh chemicals.

5.2 String Replacement

Strings should be replaced regularly to maintain optimal tone and playability. Replace one string at a time to maintain neck tension. Use high-quality bass strings of the appropriate gauge.

5.3 Battery Replacement (for Active Electronics)

The active preamp requires a 9V battery. When the sound becomes weak or distorted, it's likely time to replace the battery.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the bass.
  2. Open the compartment and carefully remove the old 9V battery.
  3. Insert a new 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment securely.

5.4 Neck Adjustment (Truss Rod)

The neck of your bass guitar contains a truss rod to counteract string tension and maintain proper neck relief. Adjustments should only be performed by experienced individuals or a qualified guitar technician. Improper adjustment can damage the neck.
