Navigating Menus

Use the MENU button to access the main menu. The directional keypad (four arrows and a center SELECT button) allows you to navigate through options and make selections. The EXIT button returns you to the previous screen or sonar view.

DualBeam PLUS Sonar

DualBeam PLUS sonar utilizes two beams for comprehensive coverage. The narrow beam provides high-accuracy returns for fish, structure, and bottom detail, while the wide beam offers a larger search area. You can view these beams separately, side-by-side, or blended together for a complete picture of the underwater environment. The coverage area is approximately equal to your current depth.

SwitchFire Sonar

SwitchFire sonar gives you control over how sonar returns are displayed. With two distinct display modes, you can easily add or remove detail, compensate for water depth, temperature, and turbulence, and even observe lure presentations. This feature allows for quick adjustments to optimize your view with the push of a button.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Unit

To clean the Helix 5 unit, gently wipe the screen and casing with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the display and plastic components. For stubborn stains, a mild soap solution can be used, followed by a rinse with clean water and thorough drying.

Transducer Care

Regularly inspect the transducer for any marine growth or debris. Clean the transducer face with a soft cloth and mild soap to ensure optimal sonar performance. Avoid scratching the transducer surface.

Storage

When storing the unit for extended periods, especially in cold weather, disconnect it from power and store it in a dry, temperature-controlled environment. This helps prevent damage from extreme temperatures or moisture.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Humminbird Helix 5 Sonar G2, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Check all power connections, including the battery terminals and the fuse. Ensure the power cable is securely plugged into the unit.
  • No Sonar Display: Verify the transducer cable is securely connected to the unit. Ensure the transducer is properly submerged in water and free from air bubbles or obstructions. Check sonar settings to ensure they are appropriate for your fishing conditions.
  • Intermittent Readings: This can often be caused by electrical interference. Ensure power cables are routed away from other electrical wiring. Check for loose connections.
  • Incorrect Depth Readings: Confirm the transducer is installed correctly and is not obstructed.
