Setup
Follow these steps to properly assemble your alto saxophone:
- Prepare the Neck and Mouthpiece:
- Apply a small amount of cork grease to the cork on the neck. This helps the mouthpiece slide on easily.
- Gently twist the mouthpiece onto the neck until it is securely in place.
- Attach the Reed:
- Carefully place a reed on the flat side of the mouthpiece, aligning the tip of the reed with the tip of the mouthpiece.
- Slide the ligature over the reed and mouthpiece, tightening the screws just enough to hold the reed firmly without crushing it. The ligature should be positioned below the cut of the reed.
- Connect the Neck to the Body:
- Loosen the neck screw on the saxophone body.
- Gently twist the assembled neck and mouthpiece into the receiver on the saxophone body. Ensure the octave key mechanism on the neck aligns with the key on the body.
- Tighten the neck screw to secure the neck in place. Do not overtighten.
- Attach the Neck Strap:
- Hook the neck strap to the ring on the back of the saxophone body. Adjust the strap length so the mouthpiece comfortably reaches your mouth when standing or sitting upright.

Operating Instructions
Holding the Saxophone:
Hold the saxophone with your left hand on the upper keys and your right hand on the lower keys. Your thumbs should rest on the thumb rests. Maintain a relaxed posture, keeping your back straight and shoulders down.
Embouchure:
Form your embouchure by placing the mouthpiece in your mouth with your upper teeth resting on the top of the mouthpiece (you may use a mouthpiece patch for comfort). Your lower lip should be slightly curled over your lower teeth, forming a cushion for the reed. Close your lips around the mouthpiece to create an airtight seal, but avoid biting down too hard on the reed.
Breathing and Airflow:
Take a deep breath from your diaphragm. Blow a steady, consistent stream of air through the mouthpiece. The reed will vibrate, producing sound. Experiment with airflow and embouchure to find a clear, stable tone.
Producing Your First Sound:
To produce your first sound, try playing a G note. This is typically done by pressing down the first three keys with your left hand (B, A, G) and the octave key with your left thumb. Blow steadily. If no sound or a squeak occurs, adjust your embouchure and airflow. Detailed fingering charts are available online and in dedicated saxophone method books.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the performance and longevity of your saxophone.
After Each Use:
- Swab the Interior: Use the included neck swab and body swab to remove moisture from the inside of the saxophone. Pass the swab through the neck and then through the body from the bell end.
- Clean the Mouthpiece: Detach the mouthpiece and reed. Rinse the mouthpiece with lukewarm water and clean it with a mouthpiece brush. Dry thoroughly.
- Dry the Reed: Gently wipe the reed dry and store it in a reed case to prevent warping.
- Wipe Down Keys: Use the microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe fingerprints and moisture from the keys and body.

Periodic Maintenance:
- Key Oil: Apply a tiny drop of key oil to the pivot points of the keys every few months to ensure smooth action. Wipe off any excess immediately.
- Pad Care: Check pads for stickiness. If a pad sticks, gently clean it with a piece of lint-free paper (like cigarette paper) inserted under the pad and pressed down.
- Cork Grease: Reapply cork grease to the neck cork as needed to facilitate mouthpiece attachment.

Storage:
Always store your saxophone in its case when not in use. Ensure all components are dry before placing them in the case. Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity, which can damage the pads and finish.
Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues and their solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound or squeaky sound | Incorrect embouchure, reed not properly positioned, reed too dry/wet, air leak. | Adjust embouchure, reposition reed, moisten reed, check for loose pads or keys. |
| Keys are sticky | Pads are dirty or sticky from moisture/sugar residue. | Clean pads with lint-free paper. If persistent, a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab can be used carefully on the pad surface. |
| Difficulty producing low notes | Air leaks, weak embouchure, insufficient air support. | Check for leaks by pressing keys firmly. Strengthen embouchure and increase air support. |
| Difficulty producing high notes | Incorrect embouchure, biting too hard, octave key malfunction. | Relax embouchure, ensure octave key is functioning correctly. |
| Loose or rattling keys | Screws are loose, bent key, worn cork/felt. | Gently tighten screws. If a key is bent or cork/felt is worn, professional repair may be needed. |
For issues not listed here or if problems persist, consult a qualified instrument repair technician.
