5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Taking a Bearing (Sighting Method)
This method allows for precise determination of the direction to a distant object.
- Hold the compass level and steady at eye level.
- Open the cover fully so the sighting wire is vertical.
- Fold the lensatic sight to a 45-degree angle.
- Look through the lensatic sight and align the sighting wire with your target object.
- While maintaining alignment, read the bearing from the compass dial through the lensatic sight. The rare earth needle will settle quickly for a stable reading.
- Rotate the bezel ring until the luminous line on the bezel aligns with the north arrow of the compass needle. This sets your desired bearing.

5.2 Orienting a Map
To align your map with true north using the compass:
- Place the compass on your map.
- Rotate the map and compass together until the north arrow of the compass needle aligns with the north direction indicated on your map (usually the top of the map).
- Adjust for magnetic declination if necessary. While the Model 94 does not have an adjustable declination scale, you can apply the correction mentally or by rotating the map.

6. Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the compass body and glass lens with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the compass in its protective carrying case when not in use. Keep it away from strong magnetic fields (e.g., magnets, electronic devices, car speakers) to prevent demagnetization.
- Phosphorescent Markings: To activate the glow, expose the compass to a light source for a few minutes.
- Inspection: Periodically check for any signs of damage to the casing or lens.
7. Troubleshooting
7.1 Needle Not Settling or Sluggish
- Cause: Proximity to magnetic interference.
- Solution: Move away from any metal objects, electronic devices, or other sources of magnetic fields.
- Cause: Extreme temperatures.
- Solution: Allow the compass to acclimate to ambient temperature.
7.2 Difficulty Reading Dial in Low Light
- Cause: Insufficient activation of phosphorescent markings.
- Solution: Expose the compass to a bright light source (sunlight, flashlight) for several minutes to charge the phosphorescent vials.
