4. Operating the Bobbin Case (Threading and Tension)

Once installed, proper threading and tension adjustment are crucial for stitch quality.

  1. Bring Up the Bobbin Thread: With the bobbin case installed and the top thread threaded through the needle, hold the end of the top thread. Turn the handwheel towards you (counter-clockwise) to lower the needle into the needle plate and then bring it back up. The needle thread will catch the bobbin thread, forming a loop. Pull the loop to bring the bobbin thread up through the needle plate opening.
  2. Position Threads: Pull both the top thread and the bobbin thread towards the back of the machine, under the presser foot.

    • To Increase Tension: Turn the screw slightly clockwise.
    • To Decrease Tension: Turn the screw slightly counter-clockwise.
    Adjust tension only if your stitches are consistently unbalanced (e.g., bobbin thread showing on top, or top thread showing on bottom). Make very small adjustments at a time (e.g., 1/8th of a turn) and test on scrap fabric.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically remove the bobbin case from the machine. Use a small brush or lint roller to remove any lint, dust, or thread scraps that may accumulate inside the bobbin case or around its tension spring. Accumulation can affect thread tension and stitch quality.
