Operating Instructions
1. Preparing for a Fire
- Ensure the fireplace is on a stable, non-combustible surface, away from any flammable materials.
- Check that the ash pan is empty and properly seated.
- Gather seasoned firewood, kindling, and fire starters. Do not use accelerants.
2. Starting a Fire
- Place kindling (small dry wood, paper, or natural fire starters) on the fire grate.
- Arrange small pieces of seasoned firewood on top of the kindling in a pyramid or crisscross pattern.
- Light the kindling. Once the kindling is burning well, gradually add larger pieces of firewood.
- Use the included poker to adjust logs as needed, ensuring proper airflow for a consistent burn.
3. Maintaining the Fire
- Add firewood as needed to maintain the desired flame. Do not overfill the firebox.
- Always use the poker to move logs to avoid burns.
- The mesh screen helps contain sparks, but always remain vigilant.
4. Extinguishing the Fire
- Allow the fire to burn down naturally. Avoid adding new wood when you intend to extinguish the fire.
- Once only embers remain, spread them out to cool faster.
- Use water or sand to thoroughly douse the embers until no smoke or heat is detected.
- Never leave the fireplace unattended until the fire is completely extinguished and cool to the touch.
Maintenance
1. Ash Removal
- After each use, once the fireplace and ashes are completely cool (allow several hours), carefully slide out the ash pan.
- Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid, away from any combustible materials.
- Clean the ash pan with a stiff brush if necessary.
2. Cleaning
- Wipe down the exterior surfaces with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.
- Periodically inspect the mesh screens for any damage or blockages.
3. Storage
- When not in use, especially during inclement weather or off-season, cover the fireplace with the provided protective cover.
- Store in a dry, sheltered location to prolong the life of the product.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty starting fire | Wet wood, insufficient kindling, poor airflow | Use dry, seasoned wood. Ensure adequate kindling. Arrange wood to allow airflow. |
| Excessive smoke | Wet wood, insufficient airflow, chimney blockage | Use dry wood. Adjust logs for better airflow. Check chimney for obstructions (when cool). |
| Sparks escaping | Very dry wood, strong winds, damaged mesh screen | Avoid using extremely dry or resinous wood. Do not use in strong winds. Inspect and repair/replace damaged mesh. |
| Fire goes out quickly | Insufficient fuel, poor airflow | Add more wood. Ensure logs are arranged to allow air circulation. |
