4. Setup and Initial Use
4.1 Charging the Device
Before first use, ensure the device is fully charged. Connect the provided USB Type-C charging cable to the CTG-20's charging port and plug the other end into a standard USB power adapter (not included) or a computer's USB port. The battery indicator on the screen will show charging status.
4.2 Powering On/Off
To power on the device, press and hold the power button (usually the central 'MODE' button or a dedicated power button, refer to device markings) until the screen illuminates. To power off, press and hold the same button until the screen turns off, or allow it to auto power off after a period of inactivity.
4.3 Calibration
For accurate measurements, it is crucial to perform calibration regularly, especially before critical measurements or if you suspect inaccuracies. The CTG-20 supports:
- Zero Point Calibration: Place the probe directly on the bare metal substrate (Fe or NFe) without any coating and perform zero calibration as per the on-screen instructions.
- Multi-point Calibration: Use the provided calibration films of known thickness on the bare metal substrate to calibrate at multiple points, ensuring accuracy across the measurement range. Follow the device's menu for multi-point calibration.
Always ensure the probe is clean and free of debris before calibration and measurement.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Measurement Principles
The FNIRSI CTG-20 operates on two main principles:
- Electromagnetic Induction (Fe): Used for measuring non-magnetic coatings on magnetic substrates (e.g., paint on steel or iron).
- Eddy Current Principle (NFe): Used for measuring non-conductive coatings on non-magnetic, conductive substrates (e.g., paint on aluminum).
The device automatically detects the substrate type (Fe or NFe) upon contact.

Figure 5.1: The CTG-20 powers on for direct testing and automatically identifies the substrate, providing immediate results.
5.2 Measurement Modes
The CTG-20 offers two primary measurement modes:
- Point Measurement (SNG): For single, precise measurements at specific points. Place the probe firmly and perpendicularly on the surface, wait for the reading to stabilize, and then lift.
- Continuous Measurement (CONT): For scanning a larger area and getting continuous readings. Keep the probe in contact with the surface and slide it smoothly across the area.
Switch between modes using the 'MODE' button on the device.

Figure 5.2: The CTG-20 supports both Point measurement (single point) and Continuous measurement (fast single point) modes.
5.3 Taking a Measurement
- Ensure the device is powered on and calibrated.
- Select the desired measurement unit (µm or mil) if applicable via the menu.
- Gently place the probe perpendicularly onto the surface to be measured. Ensure full contact.
- The device will automatically detect the substrate and display the coating thickness.
- For continuous measurement, slide the probe smoothly across the surface.
- Lift the probe to finalize a point measurement.
5.4 Data Storage and Review
The CTG-20 supports data storage. Press the 'SAVE' button (or equivalent) to save the current measurement. Refer to the device's menu for instructions on how to review stored data.
5.5 Rotatable Screen
The display can be rotated for optimal viewing. This feature is automatically activated or can be toggled via the device settings.
6. Maintenance and Care
6.1 Cleaning
Regularly clean the device, especially the probe, to ensure accurate readings. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the body. For the probe, use a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or immerse the device in water.
6.2 Storage
Store the FNIRSI CTG-20 in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. The recommended storage temperature is between -10℃ and +50℃, and humidity between 20% - 90% RH. Keep it in its original packaging or a protective case when not in use to prevent damage.
6.3 Battery Care
To prolong the life of the built-in lithium battery, avoid fully discharging it frequently. If the device will not be used for an extended period, charge it to about 50% and store it. Recharge it every few months to prevent deep discharge.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FNIRSI CTG-20, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Device not turning on:
- Ensure the battery is charged. Connect the device to a charger and try again.
- Press and hold the power button for a few seconds. - Inaccurate readings:
- Perform zero-point and multi-point calibration as described in Section 4.3.
- Ensure the probe is clean and free of debris.
- Make sure the probe is placed perpendicularly and firmly on the surface.
- Verify that the measurement surface is clean and smooth. - Screen is blank or frozen:
- Try restarting the device by holding the power button.
- If unresponsive, allow the battery to fully drain and then recharge it. - Device not detecting substrate:
- Ensure the probe is making full contact with the surface.
- The surface might be outside the device's measurement capabilities (e.g., non-conductive non-magnetic material). - Battery drains quickly:
- Ensure the device is fully charged before use.
- Reduce screen brightness if possible (check settings).
- Ensure auto power-off is enabled.
If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact FNIRSI customer support or your retailer for further assistance.
