Setup

  1. Familiarize Yourself with Components: Identify the pliers, steel jig, Delrin jig, and various sizes of steel pegs.
  2. Adjusting Pliers Tension: The pliers feature an adjustable lap joint. Use the screw on the joint to set the desired tension for the handles. A tighter setting provides more resistance, while a looser setting allows for easier compression.
  3. Inserting Pegs into Jigs:
    • For the Steel Jig: Select the appropriate steel pegs based on your desired link shape and size. Insert them into the pre-drilled 1/8" holes. The largest pegs (1/2" diameter) can create links up to 1/2"W x 2-5/8"L using the outermost holes.
    • For the Delrin Jig: This jig is undrilled for complete customization. Use the provided 1/16" drill bit to create your own unique hole patterns for custom link shapes. Ensure holes are drilled cleanly and are appropriately sized for the 1/16" steel pegs.
  4. Understanding the Jaw Stop: The jaw stop ensures consistent, repeatable pressure and prevents overextending the tool. This feature helps maintain the integrity of your links and the tool itself.

Operating Instructions

The Swanstrom Link-Forming Pliers are designed to reshape rings into custom links. This tool is suitable for use with ready-made rings or rings you have handcrafted. Do not use with cast rings.

  1. Prepare Your Ring: Ensure your ring is clean and free of burrs.
  2. Position the Jig: Place the chosen jig (steel or Delrin with custom holes) onto the lower jaw of the pliers.
  3. Insert Pegs: Insert the selected steel pegs into the jig according to your desired link design. The pegs will act as the form around which the ring will be shaped.
  4. Place the Ring: Carefully position the ring around the inserted pegs on the jig. Ensure it sits snugly against the pegs.
  5. Form the Link: Slowly and steadily squeeze the handles of the pliers. The upper jaw will press down, causing the ring to conform to the shape defined by the pegs. Apply even pressure until the desired link shape is achieved. The tempered coil spring will assist in returning the handles to their open position.
  6. Inspect the Link: Release the pliers and carefully remove the newly formed link. Inspect it for proper shape and any imperfections.
  7. Repeat: Continue the process for additional links.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the pliers and jigs with a clean, dry cloth to remove any debris or residue.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of light machine oil to the pivot points and spring mechanism to ensure smooth operation.
  • Storage: Store the pliers set in its original packaging or a protective case to prevent damage and corrosion. Keep it in a dry environment.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the jaws, pegs, and jigs for any signs of wear, damage, or misalignment. Discontinue use if significant damage is observed.
