3.3 Antenna Installation

The device includes two antennas: one for LoRa communication (915MHz) and one for 2.4G. Carefully screw each antenna into its designated connector on the device. Ensure they are finger-tight to prevent water ingress and ensure proper signal transmission.

3.4 Powering On

The D5L is pre-installed with two 18650 LiPo batteries and is primarily powered by its integrated 5W solar panel. Upon initial setup, ensure the device is exposed to sunlight to begin charging. The device will automatically power on once sufficient charge is accumulated or if it has residual battery power.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Bluetooth Integration and Configuration

The D5L features Bluetooth for easy configuration via a smartphone application. To connect:

  1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.
  2. Open the Meshtastic or Meshcore application.
  3. Search for available LoRa devices and select your D5L repeater.
  4. Follow the in-app instructions to configure network settings, channels, and other parameters.

4.2 Firmware Update

Firmware updates are crucial for optimal performance and new features. The D5L's firmware can typically be updated via the Meshtastic or Meshcore application. Before updating, it is recommended to export your current settings as a backup file to your phone.

If direct app updates are not feasible or if the device is unresponsive, you may need to enter DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode. Connect the Wisblock USB-C port to your computer. Double-click the reset button (or press the flasher button if accessible) to enter DFU mode. The device will appear as a disk drive, allowing you to copy the firmware image. Alternatively, use a web serial configuration tool or the Meshcore flasher for guided updates.

4.3 LoRa Network Operation

The D5L supports various LoRa communication modes:

  • Point-to-Point: Direct communication between two devices.
  • Point-to-Multipoint: Communication from one device to several others.
  • Relay Network: The D5L acts as a repeater, extending the range of your LoRa network.
  • AES Encryption: Supports secure communication.

The effective communication range is approximately 1-3 km in urban areas and 3-10 km in rural environments. Optimal range is achieved with a clear line of sight and appropriate mounting height.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Periodically clean the solar panel surface with a soft, damp cloth to ensure maximum charging efficiency. Remove any dust, dirt, or debris that may accumulate. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.

5.2 Battery Care

The integrated 18650 LiPo batteries are designed for long-term use with solar charging. Ensure the device receives adequate sunlight to maintain battery health. In prolonged periods of low light, the battery life will depend on usage. The system is designed to manage charging and discharging automatically.

5.3 Weather Protection

While the device is IP67 waterproof, it is good practice to periodically inspect the housing and antenna connections for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure all seals are intact. For added protection in extreme weather, consider applying silicone sealant around antenna connectors if they appear exposed.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Device Not Powering On

  • Check Solar Exposure: Ensure the solar panel is receiving direct sunlight.
  • Battery Charge: Allow several hours of direct sunlight for initial charging if the batteries are fully depleted.
  • Internal Connection: If the device has been opened, verify that the internal battery connections are secure.

6.2 Connectivity Issues

  • Bluetooth Connection: Ensure the device is discoverable and your smartphone's Bluetooth is active. Restarting both devices may help.
  • LoRa Range: Verify that antennas are correctly installed and unobstructed. Adjust mounting height or location to improve line of sight. Obstacles like buildings, dense foliage, or terrain can significantly reduce range.
  • Antenna Type: Ensure the correct antennas are used for LoRa (915MHz) and 2.4G.

6.3 Firmware Update Problems

  • DFU Mode: If the app update fails, try updating via DFU mode as described in Section 4.2.
  • Correct Firmware: Ensure you are using the correct firmware image for the RAK4631 module.
  • USB Cable: Use a reliable USB-C cable for connection to your computer.
