5.1 Mounting Location

Install the thermostat approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor on an inside wall. Avoid locations near heat sources (lamps, sunlight, fireplaces), drafts (windows, doors), or unheated/uncooled areas (outside walls, behind doors).

5.2 Removing the Old Thermostat

  1. Turn off power to your heating system at the main fuse or circuit breaker.
  2. Remove the cover of your old thermostat.
  3. Take a picture of the existing wiring connections for reference.
  4. Disconnect and label each wire before removing the old thermostat base from the wall.

Connect the wires from your heating system to the corresponding terminals on the SC1600L. Typical connections for a single-stage heat-only system include:

  • R: 24V AC power (or Millivolt power)
  • W: Heat call
  • C: Common (if applicable for 24V systems, not always used for millivolt)
  • S1, S2: Remote sensor connections (optional)

Ensure all connections are secure. This thermostat does not have a fan output.

5.4 Battery Installation

The SC1600L is battery-powered. Install two AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment located on the back of the thermostat. Observe correct polarity (+/-). The low battery indicator will alert you when batteries need replacement.

5.5 Attaching the Thermostat to the Wall

  1. Feed the wires through the opening in the new thermostat base.
  2. Secure the thermostat base to the wall using the provided screws and anchors.
  3. Snap the thermostat body onto the base.
  4. Restore power to your heating system at the main fuse or circuit breaker.

6. Operation

6.1 Powering On and Initial Display

Once batteries are installed and power is restored, the large LCD display will illuminate, showing the current room temperature and the setpoint temperature. The backlight will activate briefly when buttons are pressed.

6.2 Setting the Temperature

Use the UP () and DOWN () buttons to adjust the desired setpoint temperature. The thermostat will automatically maintain this temperature by turning your heating system on or off as needed.

6.3 System Switch (Heat/Off)

The thermostat features a manual changeover switch, typically located on the side or bottom of the unit. Set it to "Heat" for heating operation or "Off" to disable the heating system.

6.4 Freeze Protection

The SC1600L includes a freeze protection feature. If the room temperature drops below a certain threshold (e.g., 40°F / 4.5°C), the thermostat may activate the heating system to prevent pipes from freezing, even if the system switch is set to "Off" or the setpoint is lower.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the two AA alkaline batteries promptly. To replace, carefully remove the thermostat from its wall base, remove the old batteries, and insert new ones, observing correct polarity. Reattach the thermostat to the base.

7.2 Cleaning

Clean the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the internal components.

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your thermostat, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution

Heating system does not turn on.
  • System switch set to "Off".
  • Setpoint temperature is below room temperature.
  • Power to heating system is off.
  • Wiring issue.
  • Set system switch to "Heat".
  • Increase setpoint temperature above current room temperature.
  • Check circuit breaker/fuse for heating system.
  • Verify wiring connections (refer to Section 5.3).
