4. Setup and Wiring
Proper wiring is crucial for the safe and effective operation of the BMS. Refer to the detailed wiring diagram below and follow the instructions carefully.
- Prepare Battery Pack: Ensure your battery pack is assembled correctly with the desired number of series cells (10S-17S).
- Connect B- Terminal: Connect the main negative terminal of the battery pack (B-) to the B- pad on the BMS.
- Connect C- Terminal: Connect the charge/discharge negative terminal (C-) to the C- pad on the BMS.
- Connect Balance Wires: Connect the balance wires from your battery pack to the corresponding ports on the BMS. Ensure each cell's positive terminal is connected to the correct balance wire input on the BMS, starting from B1 (positive of the first cell) up to the highest cell number (e.g., B17 for a 17S pack).
- Connect NTC Sensors: If using external NTC temperature sensors, connect them to the designated NTC ports on the BMS.
- Power On: After all connections are securely made and verified, connect the main positive terminal of the battery pack to the system.

Figure 2: Detailed wiring diagram for the SP17S005 BMS. This diagram illustrates the connections for the main battery terminals (B- and C-) and the individual cell balance wires. Pay close attention to the sequence and polarity of the balance wire connections to prevent damage.
Important: Always double-check all connections before applying power. Incorrect wiring can lead to damage to the BMS, battery pack, or connected equipment.
5. Operating Instructions
Once the BMS is correctly installed and connected, it will automatically begin monitoring and protecting your battery pack.
- Charging: Connect your charger to the C- and main positive terminals of your battery pack. The BMS will manage overcharge protection and cell balancing during the charging process.
- Discharging: Connect your load to the C- and main positive terminals. The BMS will monitor over-discharge, overcurrent, and short-circuit conditions.
- Balancing: The passive balancing function will activate during charging or when the battery pack is at rest (static balancing) to equalize cell voltages.
- Temperature Monitoring: The NTC sensors continuously monitor the battery temperature to prevent overheating or operation in extreme cold.
The BMS operates autonomously. No user intervention is typically required during normal operation, beyond ensuring proper charging and discharging practices.
6. Maintenance
To ensure the long-term reliability and performance of your KACOME SP17S005 BMS and battery pack, consider the following maintenance guidelines:
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect all wiring connections for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Cleanliness: Keep the BMS and surrounding area clean and free from dust, dirt, and moisture.
- Environmental Conditions: Operate the battery pack and BMS within recommended temperature and humidity ranges. Avoid extreme conditions.
- Battery Health: Monitor the overall health of your battery pack. While the BMS provides protection, proper battery care (e.g., avoiding deep discharges, using appropriate chargers) is also essential.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your BMS, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Output/Charging:
- Check all main power connections (B-, C-, and positive terminal) for secure contact.
- Verify that all balance wires are correctly connected and not loose or damaged.
- Ensure the battery pack voltage is within the operational range and not in a deep discharge state.
- Check for any visible damage to the BMS board.
- Balancing Issues:
- Confirm that all balance wires are connected to the correct cell terminals.
- Allow sufficient time for balancing, especially if cell voltage differences are significant.
- Over-temperature Protection Triggered:
- Ensure adequate ventilation around the battery pack and BMS.
- Check if NTC sensors are properly installed and making good contact with the battery cells.
- Reduce the load or charging current if the environment is excessively hot.
- BMS Not Powering On:
- Verify the main battery voltage is present at the B- and main positive terminals.
- Ensure the BMS is compatible with your battery string count (10S-17S).
If problems persist after following these steps, contact customer support for further assistance.
