2. Safety Information

Please observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the detector:

  • Do not use the detector near live electrical wires or cables. Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Before digging, ensure you have permission to search the area and are aware of any underground utilities.
  • The control housing is not waterproof. Protect it from rain and moisture. Only the search coil is waterproof.
  • Keep batteries out of reach of children. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Dispose of batteries properly according to local regulations.
  • Avoid operating the detector in extreme temperatures.

3. Setup and Assembly

3.1 Battery Installation

The MD4030 Metal Detector requires two 9V 6F22 batteries (not included). To install:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the control unit.
  2. Open the battery cover.
  3. Insert two 9V 6F22 batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -).
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

3.2 Assembly Instructions

Follow these steps to assemble your metal detector:

  1. Attach the search coil to the lower stem using the provided bolt and knob.
  2. Connect the lower stem to the middle stem.
  3. Connect the middle stem to the upper stem, which has the control unit and armrest attached.
  4. Route the cable from the search coil along the stem and plug it into the corresponding jack on the control unit. Secure the cable with the provided clips or ties to prevent tangling.
  5. Adjust the length of the stem by loosening the locking collar, extending or retracting the stem to a comfortable height (78-107cm / 30.71-42.12 inches), and then tightening the collar.
  6. Adjust the armrest for comfortable use.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On and Basic Operation

To begin using your MD4030:

  1. Hold the detector comfortably with the search coil parallel to the ground.
  2. Turn the Power Switch knob clockwise to power on the device.
  3. Adjust the Volume knob to a comfortable listening level for audio alerts.
  4. Adjust the Sensitivity knob. Start with a medium setting and increase it for deeper detection, or decrease it if you experience excessive false signals.

4.2 Detection Modes

The MD4030 offers two primary detection modes:

  • All Metal Mode: This mode detects all types of metal objects, including iron, aluminum, gold, silver, and bronze. It offers the greatest depth of detection.
  • Discrimination Mode: This mode allows the detector to distinguish between different types of metals and can be used to filter out unwanted metals (e.g., iron trash). Adjust the Discrimination knob to set the level of rejection. Higher discrimination settings will ignore more ferrous metals.

4.3 Detection Indication

When a metal object is detected, the MD4030 provides two indications:

  • Mechanical Pointer Mode: The pointer on the control panel will move to indicate the presence and strength of the detected signal.
  • Audio Mode: An audible tone will sound. The pitch or intensity of the tone may vary depending on the type and size of the metal object.

For noisy environments, the detector includes a headphone jack for private listening.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your metal detector:

  • Cleaning: Wipe down the detector with a damp cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Ensure the control unit remains dry.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a dry, cool place when not in use. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
  • Search Coil: While the search coil is waterproof, avoid submerging the entire detector. Clean the coil with fresh water if used in saltwater environments.
  • Cable Care: Ensure the cable from the search coil is not kinked or damaged.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your MD4030, refer to the following table:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No power
  • Batteries are dead or incorrectly installed.
  • Power switch is off.
  • Replace batteries with new 9V batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
  • Turn the power switch clockwise to the ON position.
No detection or weak signal
  • Sensitivity setting is too low.
  • Search coil not parallel to the ground.
  • Target is too deep or too small.
  • Cable connection is loose.
  • Increase the Sensitivity setting.
  • Ensure the search coil is swept parallel to the ground.
  • Sweep slower and closer to the ground.
  • Check and secure the search coil cable connection.
False signals or erratic behavior
  • High electromagnetic interference.
  • Sensitivity setting is too high.
  • Mineralized ground.
  • Nearby large metal objects.
  • Move away from power lines, cell phones, or other electronic devices.
  • Decrease the Sensitivity setting.
  • Switch to Discrimination mode if applicable, or try to ground balance if the model supports it (MD4030 does not have manual ground balance).
  • Move to a different area.
