4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Inspection
- Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
- Inspect all items for any signs of shipping damage. If any damage is found, do not operate the equipment and contact customer support immediately.
- Verify that all listed components are present.
4.2 Connecting Air Hose and Couplers
- Attach the MERLIN I/M Series Female Coupler to one end of the MERLIN 1/4" x 100' Polyurethane Air Hose.
- Attach the MERLIN I/M Series Male Industrial Swivel Plug to the air inlet of the PIERCE Roofing Nailer.
- Connect the female coupler on the hose to the male plug on the nailer. Ensure a secure connection.
- Connect the other end of the air hose to the air outlet of the FORTRESS Air Compressor.
4.3 Compressor Setup
- Place the FORTRESS Air Compressor on a firm, level surface.
- Ensure the power switch is in the "OFF" position.
- Plug the compressor into a grounded 120V AC electrical outlet.
- Turn the power switch to "ON". The compressor will begin to build pressure.
- Adjust the regulator knob to the desired operating pressure for the roofing nailer (typically between 70-120 PSI, refer to nailer specific instructions for optimal range).
4.4 Nailer Loading
- Ensure the nailer is disconnected from the air supply before loading fasteners.
- Open the magazine latch and load a coil of roofing nails into the magazine. Ensure the nails are correctly oriented.
- Close the magazine latch securely.
- Reconnect the nailer to the air supply.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 General Nailer Operation
The PIERCE Roofing Nailer uses a contact operation trigger. This means the tool will fire a nail when the trigger is pulled and the contact trip is depressed against the work surface.
- Ensure the air compressor is running and has reached the desired operating pressure.
- Hold the nailer firmly with both hands.
- Place the nose of the nailer firmly against the material where the nail is to be driven.
- Depress the contact trip against the work surface, then pull the trigger to fire a nail.
- For continuous nailing, keep the trigger depressed and move the nailer along the work surface, depressing the contact trip at each desired nailing point.
- Adjust the depth of drive if necessary (refer to nailer specific instructions for depth adjustment mechanism).

5.2 Compressor Operation
The FORTRESS Air Compressor is designed for continuous operation within its duty cycle. It will automatically cycle on and off to maintain the set pressure.
- Monitor the pressure gauges to ensure the compressor is operating within safe limits.
- If the compressor runs continuously without building pressure, check for air leaks in the hose or connections.
- If the compressor overheats, it may shut off automatically. Allow it to cool down before restarting.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your roofing kit.
6.1 PIERCE Roofing Nailer Maintenance
- Daily: Disconnect from air supply. Clean the tool, especially the nose and magazine area, to remove debris and dust. Apply a few drops of pneumatic tool oil into the air inlet before each use or at the end of the day.
- Weekly/As Needed: Check all screws and fasteners for tightness. Inspect the driver blade and O-rings for wear. Replace worn parts as necessary.
6.2 FORTRESS Air Compressor Maintenance
- After Each Use: Drain moisture from the air tank by opening the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. This prevents rust and extends tank life.
- Monthly: Inspect the air filter for cleanliness. Clean or replace if clogged. Check all connections for air leaks.
- Annually: Have the pressure relief valve checked by a qualified technician to ensure it functions correctly.
6.3 Air Hose and Coupler Care
- Inspect the air hose for cuts, abrasions, or kinks before each use. Replace if damaged.
- Keep couplers clean and free of debris. Lubricate moving parts of swivel couplers periodically with a light machine oil.
- Store the hose coiled neatly to prevent tangling and damage.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your roofing nailer kit.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Nailer does not fire or fires weakly. | Low air pressure; Air leak; No fasteners; Jammed mechanism; Worn O-rings. | Check compressor pressure and adjust; Inspect hose and connections for leaks; Load fasteners; Clear any jams; Inspect and replace O-rings. |
| Nails are not driven flush. | Insufficient air pressure; Depth adjustment incorrect; Wrong fastener length. | Increase air pressure; Adjust depth setting on nailer; Ensure correct fastener length for material. |
| Nailer jams frequently. | Incorrect fasteners; Damaged fasteners; Worn driver blade; Debris in magazine. | Use correct, undamaged fasteners; Inspect and replace driver blade; Clean magazine thoroughly. |
| Compressor runs continuously. | Air leak in system; Pressure switch malfunction; Tank drain valve open. | Check all connections for leaks; Consult qualified technician for pressure switch; Close tank drain valve. |
| Compressor does not start. | No power; Thermal overload tripped; Motor issue. | Check power connection and circuit breaker; Allow compressor to cool down and reset; Consult qualified technician. |
