Setup and Installation

The NEEWER ND/PL filters are designed for screw-in quick installation. Follow these steps to properly attach the filters to your DJI Osmo Action 4 or Action 5 Pro camera:

  1. Remove Original Lens: Before attaching any NEEWER filter, it is essential to remove the original protective lens cover from your DJI Osmo Action camera. The filters are designed to screw directly onto the camera's lens mount.
  2. Align and Screw On: Carefully align the chosen ND/PL filter with the camera's lens thread. Gently screw the filter clockwise until it is securely attached. Avoid overtightening.
  3. Verify Fit: Ensure the filter is flush and stable on the camera lens. The lightweight aluminum frame ensures a secure fit during intense movements.

Important Note: Some users prefer snap-on filters that do not require removing the original lens cover. This NEEWER filter series requires the original lens to be removed for proper installation and sealing. If you prefer not to remove the original lens, consider NEEWER snap-on filter series (sold separately).

Operating the Filters

The NEEWER ND/PL filters combine the functions of Neutral Density (ND) and Polarizing (PL) filters, offering versatile control over your camera's exposure and image quality.

Understanding ND/PL Filters

  • Neutral Density (ND) Function: ND filters reduce the amount of light entering the camera sensor without affecting color balance. This allows for slower shutter speeds and wider apertures in bright conditions, enabling cinematic motion blur effects and proper exposure.
  • Polarizing (PL) Function: PL filters reduce glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces like water, glass, and foliage. They also enhance color saturation and contrast, making skies bluer and greenery more vibrant.

Filter Strengths and Applications

The set includes four different strengths to suit various lighting conditions:

  • ND8/PL: Reduces light by 3 stops. Ideal for slightly overcast days or when subtle motion blur is desired.
  • ND16/PL: Reduces light by 4 stops. Suitable for normal bright conditions.
  • ND32/PL: Reduces light by 5 stops. Excellent for very bright conditions, such as sunny days at the beach or snow.
  • ND64/PL: Reduces light by 6 stops. Best for extremely bright environments, allowing for very slow shutter speeds.

By selecting the appropriate filter, you can achieve perfectly exposed images and videos, capture dynamic motion blur, and enhance the overall visual appeal of your footage in various outdoor scenarios like surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, skiing, mountain biking, skydiving, and skateboarding.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your NEEWER ND/PL filters, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use the provided cleaning cloth to gently wipe the filter surfaces. For stubborn smudges, a small amount of lens cleaning solution can be applied to the cloth, not directly to the filter.
  • Protection: The filters feature 30 layers of protective nanometer coatings on both sides of the HD optical glass, making them resistant to water, oil, dust, and scratches. However, always handle them with care to prevent damage.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the filters in the included storage case to protect them from dust, scratches, and impacts.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common observations and potential issues when using the NEEWER ND/PL Filter Set.

  • Filter Installation Difficulty: If you find it difficult to screw on the filters, ensure that the original lens cover of your DJI Osmo Action camera has been completely removed. The filters are designed for direct threading onto the camera's lens mount. Do not force the filter if it doesn't align easily.
  • Color Cast: In some specific lighting conditions or with certain filter strengths (e.g., ND32), a very slight warm color cast might be observed. This is generally minor and can often be corrected during post-processing if necessary.
  • Vignetting: When using the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro/4 camera's widest field of view settings, slight vignetting (darkening at the corners of the image) may occur with the filters. Adjusting the field of view or cropping in post-processing can mitigate this effect.
  • Image Stabilization: Some users have reported that very strong ND filters (e.g., ND64 or ND1000, if applicable to other sets) might affect the digital image stabilization of the camera, especially at very slow shutter speeds. If you experience unusual stabilization behavior, try adjusting your shutter speed or camera settings.
