4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Choosing a Location

Select a firm, level surface for the sand filter pump, preferably close to the pool. Ensure the location is well-drained and protected from direct sunlight and extreme weather conditions. Allow sufficient space around the unit for maintenance.

4.2 Assembling the Filter System

  1. Place the sand filter tank base on the chosen level surface.
  2. Position the sand filter tank onto the base.
  3. Carefully add the filter media (sand or glass sand) into the tank. Refer to section 4.3 for media requirements.
  4. Attach the multi-port 6-way valve to the top of the filter tank, ensuring a tight seal.
  5. Install the pressure gauge into the designated port on the 6-way valve.

4.3 Adding Filter Media

The filter tank requires either 77 lbs of No. 20 Silica Sand or 55 lbs of Glass Sand. It is recommended to fill the tank halfway with water before adding the sand to cushion the laterals at the bottom of the tank and prevent damage.

4.4 Connecting Hoses

Connect the provided 1.5" diameter hoses (15", 40", and 120" lengths) between the pump, filter, and your pool's inlet and outlet ports. Use hose clamps and sealing rings to ensure all connections are watertight. The sealing rings prevent leakage.

4.5 Electrical Connection

Plug the integrated GFCI plug into a suitable 110-120V electrical outlet. The GFCI plug provides automatic power cut-off in case of electrical faults, ensuring safe operation. Do not bypass or modify the GFCI plug.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Initial Start-up and Backwash

Before first use, it is crucial to backwash the filter to remove any fine dust from the filter media. This ensures optimal filtration performance.

  1. Ensure the pool is filled with water and all connections are secure.
  2. With the pump OFF, set the 6-way valve handle to the "BACKWASH" position.
  3. Turn the pump ON. Run for 2-3 minutes or until the water flowing out of the waste port is clear.
  4. Turn the pump OFF.
  5. Set the 6-way valve handle to the "RINSE" position.
  6. Turn the pump ON. Run for 30-60 seconds to rinse the filter media.
  7. Turn the pump OFF.
  8. Set the 6-way valve handle to the "FILTER" position for normal operation.
  9. Turn the pump ON.

5.2 6-Way Valve Functions

The multi-port 6-way valve simplifies maintenance and operation. Always turn the pump OFF before changing the valve position.

Figure 5.2.1: The 6-way valve offers various functions for comprehensive pool maintenance.

  • FILTER: Normal filtering mode. Water flows through the filter media and returns to the pool.
  • BACKWASH: Cleans the filter by reversing water flow, sending dirty water to waste.
  • RINSE: Used after backwashing to flush dirty water from the valve and lines to waste.
  • WASTE: Bypasses the filter, sending water directly out the waste port. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris or lowering pool water level.
  • RECIRCULATE: Bypasses the filter, circulating water directly back to the pool. Useful for chemical distribution without filtering.
  • CLOSED: Shuts off all flow to the filter and pump. Use for servicing the pump or filter.

5.3 Timer Settings

The integrated timer allows for flexible operation. You can set 1-12 hour cycles or choose 24/7 continuous operation.

Figure 5.3.1: The control panel with timer settings for automated operation.

  • To set a timed cycle: Use the timer controls on the pump to select the desired operating duration (e.g., 4 hours, 8 hours). The pump will run for the set duration and then turn off.
  • For continuous operation: Select the 24/7 setting.
  • The panel will display a countdown for the set timer, indicating the remaining operating time.

The high-performance motor ensures strong circulation and vacuuming with a flow rate of 3036 GPH (13,802 LPH), rapidly refreshing your pool water.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Regular Backwashing

Backwash the filter when the pressure gauge reading increases by 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when pool water clarity decreases. Follow the backwash procedure outlined in section 5.1.

6.2 Pre-Filter Basket Cleaning

The pump includes a pre-filter basket to capture larger debris before it reaches the sand filter. Regularly inspect and clean the pre-filter basket to maintain optimal pump performance and prevent clogging.

  1. Turn the pump OFF and disconnect power.
  2. Close any necessary valves to prevent water flow from the pool.
  3. Remove the pre-filter basket lid.
  4. Lift out the basket and empty any collected debris.
  5. Rinse the basket thoroughly with water.
  6. Replace the basket and secure the lid, ensuring a tight seal.
  7. Restore power and open valves before restarting the pump.

6.3 Winterization

Before freezing temperatures arrive, drain all water from the pump, filter, and hoses. Disconnect and store the pump and filter in a dry, protected area. Remove the pressure gauge and store it separately.

7. Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues. For problems not listed here, please contact customer support.

7.1 Low Water Flow / Poor Filtration

  • Check Pressure Gauge: If pressure is high, the filter may be dirty. Perform a backwash and rinse cycle (Section 5.1).
  • Clean Pre-Filter Basket: A clogged pre-filter basket can restrict flow (Section 6.2).
  • Inspect Hoses: Ensure hoses are not kinked, blocked, or leaking.
  • Check Water Level: Ensure the pool water level is adequate for proper pump priming.
  • Air Leak: Check all connections for air leaks, especially on the suction side of the pump.

7.2 Pump Not Starting / No Power

  • Check GFCI: Ensure the GFCI plug has not tripped. Reset if necessary. If it trips repeatedly, there may be an electrical fault.
  • Power Supply: Verify the pump is securely plugged into a working outlet.
  • Motor Overload: The motor has overload protection. Allow it to cool down if it has overheated.

7.3 Water Leaks

  • Hose Connections: Tighten all hose clamps. Ensure sealing rings are properly seated.
  • Valve Gasket: Inspect the gasket on the 6-way valve for damage or improper seating.
  • Drain Plugs: Ensure all drain plugs are securely tightened.
