  • Handle: Used to retrieve line.
  • Star Drag: Adjusts the drag tension to control line release during a fight.
  • Spool Tension Knob (Cast Control): Controls the spool's rotation speed during casting to prevent backlashes.
  • Magnetic Brake System: Provides additional casting control, adjustable via a dial on the side plate.
  • Spool: Holds the fishing line.
  • Thumb Bar (Free Spool Release): Engages and disengages the spool for casting.
  • Level Wind System: Distributes line evenly across the spool during retrieve.

5. Setup

5.1 Attaching to a Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod.
  2. Tighten the reel seat nut securely until the reel is firmly in place. Ensure there is no wobble.

5.2 Spooling Line

  1. Open the side plate (refer to Figure 3) to access the spool.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  3. Close the side plate.
  4. Thread the line through the level wind guide and then through all the guides on your fishing rod.
  5. Maintain light tension on the line while slowly reeling it onto the spool. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) from the rim. Overfilling can cause backlashes.

5.3 Adjusting the Drag

The star drag controls the amount of force required to pull line from the spool. Adjust it to prevent line breakage when a fish pulls hard.

  • To increase drag tension, turn the star drag knob clockwise.
  • To decrease drag tension, turn the star drag knob counter-clockwise.
  • A good starting point is to set the drag to about 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.

5.4 Adjusting the Spool Tension (Cast Control)

The spool tension knob (often located near the handle) controls the initial speed of the spool during a cast. Proper adjustment is crucial for preventing backlashes.

  1. Attach a lure or weight to your line.
  2. Tighten the spool tension knob until the lure holds steady without falling.
  3. Press the thumb bar to release the spool.
  4. Slowly loosen the spool tension knob until the lure falls slowly and steadily to the ground. The spool should stop rotating when the lure hits the ground.
  5. Adjust further as needed based on lure weight and casting conditions.

5.5 Adjusting the Magnetic Brake

The magnetic brake system provides fine-tuning for casting control, especially useful for different lure weights and wind conditions.

Figure 4: Top-down view of the reel, showing the handle, star drag, and the 'FREE ZONE FMB MAG BRAKE' system.

  • The magnetic brake dial (Figure 2) is typically numbered from 1 (least braking) to 10 (most braking).
  • For beginners or when using lighter lures, start with a higher brake setting (e.g., 7-10) to minimize backlashes.
  • As you gain experience or use heavier lures, you can reduce the brake setting for longer casts.
  • Adjust in conjunction with the spool tension knob for optimal casting performance.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Casting

  1. Hold the rod with the reel facing upwards.
  2. Press the thumb bar to disengage the spool (free spool mode).
  3. Place your thumb firmly on the spool to prevent line from coming off.
  4. Bring the rod back over your shoulder, then cast forward with a smooth, controlled motion.
  5. As the lure travels forward, lift your thumb slightly to allow the line to peel off the spool.
  6. Just before the lure hits the water, apply light thumb pressure to the spool to stop its rotation and prevent a backlash.
  7. Engage the reel by turning the handle slightly or pressing the thumb bar again (depending on the reel's design).

6.2 Retrieving

Turn the handle clockwise (for right-hand retrieve) to reel in your line. The level wind system will guide the line evenly onto the spool.

6.3 Setting the Hook

When you feel a bite, quickly and firmly lift the rod tip to set the hook. Continue reeling to maintain tension on the line.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Use a cotton swab to clean hard-to-reach areas and the level wind guide.

7.2 Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle shaft, level wind worm gear, and spool bearings.
  • Use reel grease on gears if you open the side plate for deeper cleaning. Refer to a professional if unsure.
  • Do not over-lubricate, as this can attract dirt and debris.

7.3 Storage

  • Store the reel with the drag loosened to prevent compression of the drag washers.
  • Keep the reel in a protective case or bag to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from corrosive chemicals.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Backlashes: Often caused by improper spool tension or magnetic brake settings, or incorrect thumb control during casting. Adjust settings and practice casting technique.
  • Stiff Handle/Grinding Noise: May indicate a need for cleaning and lubrication, or internal damage. Clean and lubricate the reel. If the issue persists, professional service may be required.
  • Drag Slipping: Could be due to worn drag washers or insufficient drag tension. Check drag settings and consider replacing washers if worn.
  • Line Not Laying Evenly: Ensure the level wind system is clean and free of obstructions. Check for bent or damaged level wind components.
