7. Modes of Operation

The Boston Tech ME91 offers three distinct modes, each with 50 preset programs, to cater to different therapeutic needs:

7.1 TENS Mode (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

TENS mode is primarily used for pain relief. It works by sending low-voltage electrical impulses through the skin to stimulate nerves, which can block pain signals from reaching the brain and encourage the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. It is effective for chronic and acute pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, arthritis, and sciatica.

7.2 EMS Mode (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)

EMS mode is designed for muscle stimulation and rehabilitation. It sends electrical impulses that cause muscles to contract and relax, mimicking natural muscle movements. This can help improve muscle strength, reduce muscle atrophy, increase blood circulation, and aid in muscle recovery after injury or surgery.

7.3 Fitness Mode

Fitness mode is tailored for muscle toning, strengthening, and endurance. It uses specific pulse patterns to engage muscles in a way that can complement physical exercise, helping to improve muscle definition and performance. This mode is often used for warm-up, strength training, and active recovery.

8. Electrode Placement

Correct electrode placement is crucial for effective and safe treatment. Always ensure your skin is clean, dry, and free of oils or lotions before applying electrodes.

  • General Principle: Place electrodes on or around the area of pain or the muscle group you wish to stimulate.
  • Pair Placement: Electrodes must always be used in pairs. Place them at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart.
  • Pain Relief (TENS): For localized pain, place electrodes on either side of the painful area. For radiating pain, place one electrode near the spine and the other along the nerve pathway.
  • Muscle Stimulation (EMS/Fitness): Place electrodes on the belly of the muscle you intend to stimulate. For larger muscles, two pairs may be used.
  • Avoid Sensitive Areas: Do not place electrodes on the face, head, front of the neck, over the heart, or directly over joints where bones are close to the skin surface.
  • Skin Contact: Ensure full contact between the electrode gel and your skin. Replace electrodes when they lose their adhesiveness.

9. Maintenance and Care

Proper care will extend the life of your Boston Tech ME91 Muscle Stimulator.

  • Cleaning the Device: Wipe the unit with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water.
  • Cleaning Electrodes: Gently wipe the adhesive side of the electrodes with a damp cloth after each use to remove any skin oils or debris. Allow them to air dry completely before reattaching them to their protective film.
  • Storage: Store the device and electrodes in their protective case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Electrode Replacement: Electrodes are consumable items. Replace them when they lose their stickiness or if you notice uneven stimulation.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.
