BST BSSP Square U-Bolts Installation Manual

Model: FBA-BS-101-344

For 1988-2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 & GMC Sierra 1500

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation and maintenance of your BST BSSP 4-piece Square U-Bolts. These U-bolts are designed as a direct replacement for the leaf springs on 1988-2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models. Adherence to these instructions will help ensure safe and effective operation.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working on your vehicle. Improper installation can lead to serious injury or vehicle damage. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified professional mechanic.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment: This includes safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
  • Secure the vehicle: Always use jack stands on a level, stable surface after lifting the vehicle. Never rely solely on a jack.
  • Use correct tools: Ensure all tools are in good condition and are the correct size for the fasteners.
  • Do not over-tighten: Follow specified torque values to prevent damage to components.
  • Inspect components: Before installation, inspect all parts for any signs of damage or manufacturing defects. Do not install damaged parts.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present and undamaged before beginning installation.

  • 4 x Square Zinc Coated U-Bolts
  • 8 x Hex Nuts

4. Setup and Installation

This section outlines the general procedure for replacing U-bolts. Specific vehicle service manual procedures should be followed for detailed steps.

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels. Lift the vehicle using a floor jack and support it securely with jack stands under the frame, ensuring the axle is free to move. Remove the wheels.
  2. Support the Axle: Place a jack under the axle to support its weight and prevent it from dropping unexpectedly when the old U-bolts are removed.
  3. Remove Old U-Bolts: Carefully loosen and remove the nuts from the existing U-bolts. Remove the old U-bolts, washers, and nuts. Note the orientation of any blocks or spacers.
  4. Clean Mounting Surfaces: Clean any rust or debris from the leaf spring and axle mounting surfaces to ensure proper seating of the new components.
  5. Position New U-Bolts: Place the new BST BSSP square U-bolts over the leaf spring and around the axle, ensuring they are correctly aligned with the mounting plate.
  6. Install Hardware: Place the washers and then thread the new nuts onto the U-bolt ends. Hand-tighten all nuts to ensure proper engagement.
  7. Initial Tightening: Gradually tighten the U-bolt nuts in a cross-pattern. This ensures even clamping force. Do not fully tighten at this stage.
  8. Lower Vehicle and Final Torque: Carefully lower the vehicle until the suspension is under load. Using a torque wrench, tighten the U-bolt nuts to the manufacturer's specified torque. A common initial torque for similar applications is approximately 80 ft-lbs (108 Nm). Refer to your vehicle's service manual for exact specifications.
  9. Re-torque: After driving approximately 100 miles, re-torque the U-bolt nuts to 85-91 ft-lbs (115-123 Nm). This is crucial as U-bolts can stretch slightly after initial use.
  10. Final Checks: Reinstall wheels and lower the vehicle completely. Check for proper alignment and ensure no components are binding.

5. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the U-bolts function as a critical component of your vehicle's suspension system, securing the leaf springs to the axle. No specific 'operating' steps are required beyond ensuring correct installation and regular maintenance.

6. Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance are vital for the longevity and safety of your U-bolts and suspension system.

  • Periodic Inspection: Visually inspect the U-bolts and surrounding components every 6 months or during routine vehicle service. Look for signs of corrosion, bending, cracking, or loose nuts.
  • Re-torque: It is recommended to re-torque the U-bolt nuts annually or after any heavy load carrying, especially if you frequently tow or haul.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the U-bolts free from excessive dirt, mud, and road salt to minimize corrosion, especially in harsh environments.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues after U-bolt installation, consider the following:

  • Loose Nuts: If you hear clunking noises or feel excessive play in the rear suspension, the U-bolt nuts may have loosened. Re-torque them to the specified values.
  • Uneven Ride Height: Ensure all U-bolts are tightened evenly and that any lift blocks or spacers are correctly seated and oriented.
  • Corrosion/Damage: If U-bolts show significant rust, bending, or cracking, they should be replaced immediately. The zinc coating helps prevent corrosion, but severe conditions can still cause wear.
