Preparation Guidelines

Grinding Recommendations

  • For Drip Coffee: Medium grind.
  • For Pour Over: Medium-fine grind.
  • For French Press: Coarse grind.
  • For Espresso: Very fine grind.
  • For Cold Brew: Coarse grind.

Hot Brew Methods

For optimal flavor, use filtered water and a brew ratio of approximately 1:15 to 1:18 (coffee to water by weight). Adjust to personal preference.

  1. Heat water to 195-205°F (90-96°C).
  2. Measure desired amount of freshly ground coffee.
  3. Brew using your preferred method (drip, pour over, French press, espresso).
  4. Serve immediately for best taste.

Cold Brew Methods

Cold brewing extracts a smoother, less acidic coffee concentrate. Use a coarse grind for best results.

  1. Combine coarsely ground coffee with cold, filtered water in a ratio of 1:4 to 1:8 (coffee to water by weight).
  2. Stir gently to ensure all grounds are saturated.
  3. Cover and steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours.
  4. Strain the concentrate through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth.
  5. Dilute with water or milk to taste before serving. Store concentrate in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Storage and Freshness

Proper storage is crucial for maintaining the quality and flavor of your whole bean coffee. While coffee beans do not expire or become harmful when stored correctly, they can go stale over time, losing their aromatic compounds and desirable flavors.

  • Airtight Container: Store whole beans in an opaque, airtight container away from light and heat. The resealable pouch provided is designed for this purpose.
  • Cool, Dark Place: Keep coffee in a pantry or cabinet, away from direct sunlight, ovens, or other heat sources.
  • Avoid Refrigeration: Do not store coffee in the refrigerator, as it can absorb odors and moisture, leading to stale flavors.
  • Freezing (Optional): For long-term storage (beyond 2-3 weeks), whole beans can be frozen in an airtight container. Thaw only the amount needed to prevent repeated freezing and thawing, which can degrade quality.
  • Freshly Grind: For the best flavor, grind beans just before brewing.

Common Questions

Why does my coffee taste stale?

Stale coffee is often a result of exposure to air, light, heat, or moisture. Ensure your beans are stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Grinding beans immediately before brewing also significantly impacts freshness.

How do I adjust the strength of my coffee?

Coffee strength can be adjusted by altering the coffee-to-water ratio. For stronger coffee, use more coffee grounds or less water. For weaker coffee, use less coffee grounds or more water. Experiment to find your preferred balance.
