  • D-Pad: Used for menu navigation and directional input in games.
  • Analog Joysticks: Provide precise 360-degree movement, typically for 3D games or menu scrolling.
  • A/B/X/Y Buttons: Action buttons for gameplay, their functions vary by game.
  • SELECT/START Buttons: Used for in-game actions like pausing, confirming selections, or starting games.
  • FN Button: Function button, often used in combination with other buttons for system shortcuts (e.g., saving state, exiting game).
  • Shoulder Buttons (L1/L2/R1/R2): Located on the top/rear of the console, used for additional in-game actions.

2.3 Game Selection and Launch

The console's Linux system provides an intuitive interface for browsing and launching games.

  1. From the main menu, use the D-pad or analog stick to navigate through the list of emulators or game categories.
  2. Select an emulator (e.g., NES, SNES, PS1) to view its game library.
  3. Browse the game list and press the 'A' button (or equivalent) to launch a selected game.

2.4 Saving and Loading Game States

Many emulators support 'save states,' allowing you to save your progress at any point, independent of the game's internal save system.

  • Typically, pressing the FN button combined with another button (e.g., START or SELECT) will bring up an in-game menu where you can save or load states. Refer to the specific emulator's documentation for exact key combinations.

2.5 Connecting to an External Display (OTG)

The R36S supports connecting to an external display via its Type-C OTG port, allowing you to play games on a larger screen.

  2. Connect the OTG adapter to the console's Type-C OTG port.
  3. Connect an HDMI cable (not included) from the OTG adapter to your external display (TV, monitor).
  4. The console's display should mirror or extend to the external screen.

2.6 Connecting an External Gamepad

For a more traditional console experience, you can connect an external gamepad via the OTG port.

  1. Connect a compatible USB gamepad to the OTG adapter, which is connected to the console.
  2. The console's system should automatically detect and configure most standard USB gamepads.
  3. You may need to configure button mappings within the emulator settings for specific games.

3. Maintenance

3.1 Cleaning the Console

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the console's exterior.
  • For stubborn smudges, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid excessive moisture.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the console's finish or screen.
  • Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean dust from ports and crevices.

3.2 Battery Care

The console's 3500mAh Lithium-Ion battery provides up to 8 hours of gameplay. Proper care can extend its lifespan:

  • Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Recharge when the battery level is low.
  • Do not expose the console to extreme temperatures (hot or cold), as this can degrade battery performance.
  • If storing the console for an extended period, charge the battery to approximately 50% before storage.

3.3 Software Updates

As the R36S runs on an open-source Linux system, firmware updates may be released periodically by the community or manufacturer to improve performance, add features, or fix bugs. Check the official MINDKEEP support channels or community forums for information on how to perform updates safely.

4. Troubleshooting

4.1 Console Does Not Power On

  • Check Battery: Ensure the console is sufficiently charged. Connect it to a power source and allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on again.
  • Power Button: Confirm you are pressing and holding the Power button for the required duration (typically 3-5 seconds).
  • TF Card: Ensure the TF card is properly inserted. A loose or corrupted TF card can sometimes prevent the system from booting.

4.2 Games Do Not Load or Crash

  • TF Card Integrity: The game files are stored on the TF card. If games are crashing, the TF card might be corrupted or damaged. Try reinserting it or, if possible, testing with a known good TF card.
  • Game File Corruption: Individual game ROMs might be corrupted. Try other games to see if the issue is isolated.
  • Emulator Settings: Incorrect emulator settings can cause issues. If you've recently changed settings, try reverting them or resetting the emulator configuration.

4.3 Screen Issues (No Display, Flickering)

  • Brightness: Ensure the screen brightness is not set to minimum.
  • Reboot: Perform a full power cycle (turn off and on) to resolve temporary display glitches.
  • Physical Damage: Inspect the screen for any visible physical damage.

4.4 No Sound

  • Volume Level: Check the volume buttons on the console to ensure the volume is not muted or set to minimum.
  • Headphone Jack: If headphones are connected, ensure they are fully plugged in and functional. Test with another pair of headphones.
  • Game/Emulator Settings: Some games or emulators have their own internal volume controls. Check these settings.
