5. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and effective operation of your power converter. If you are not experienced with electrical systems, consult a certified electrician.

5.1 Mounting Location

  • Choose a dry, well-ventilated area, free from direct sunlight, moisture, and flammable materials.
  • Ensure adequate clearance around the unit for proper airflow, especially around the cooling fan.
  • Mount the converter securely to a stable surface using appropriate fasteners.

5.2 Wiring Connections

Always disconnect all power sources (shore power, battery) before making any connections.

  1. DC Output Connections: Connect the 12V DC output terminals to your RV's 12V DC distribution panel and battery bank. Ensure correct polarity: Red terminal for positive (+), Black terminal for negative (-). Recommended wire gauge for 45 Amps is 8 AWG or thicker for optimal performance and safety.
  2. AC Input Connection: Once DC connections are secure, plug the attached 3-foot AC power cord into a standard 120VAC, 50/60Hz outlet.

6. Operating Modes

The LATCH.IT 45 Amp RV Power Converter offers two primary operating modes to accommodate different battery types.

6.1 3-Stage Charging Mode (For Lead-Acid Batteries)

This mode is optimized for lead-acid batteries (including flooded, AGM, and Gel). The converter automatically cycles through three charging stages to ensure efficient and safe charging, protecting and extending battery life:

  • Bulk Stage: Delivers maximum current to rapidly charge the battery up to approximately 80% capacity.
  • Absorption Stage: Voltage is held constant (typically 14.4V-14.6V) while current decreases, bringing the battery to 100% charge.
  • Float Stage: Voltage is reduced (typically 13.2V-13.6V) to maintain the battery at full charge without overcharging.

6.2 Fixed Voltage Mode (For Lithium-Ion LiFePO4 Batteries)

For lithium-ion (LiFePO4) batteries, use the fixed voltage mode. This mode allows you to adjust the output voltage to the specific requirements of your lithium battery bank. The converter will automatically stop charging when the battery reaches its full charge voltage, preventing overcharge.

  • Consult your lithium battery manufacturer's specifications for the recommended charging voltage.
  • Adjust the output voltage using the designated control on the unit (refer to the product diagram for location). Use a voltmeter to verify the output voltage before connecting to your battery.
  • The converter will maintain this set voltage until the battery management system (BMS) of your lithium battery signals a full charge, at which point the converter will cease charging.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your LATCH.IT RV Power Converter.

7.1 Cleaning

  • Periodically inspect the cooling fan and ventilation openings for dust and debris.
  • Use a soft, dry cloth or a low-pressure air duster to gently clean the exterior and clear any obstructions from the fan and vents.
  • Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.

7.2 Fuse Replacement

The converter is equipped with replaceable fuses for protection. If the unit stops functioning, check the fuses.

  • Disconnect all power sources (AC and DC) before inspecting or replacing fuses.
  • Locate the fuse holders on the unit (refer to the product diagram).
  • Carefully remove the old fuse and replace it with a new fuse of the exact same type and rating (e.g., 40A). An extra replacement fuse is included with your unit.
  • If fuses blow repeatedly, there may be an underlying electrical issue. Consult a qualified technician.
