4. Installation and Setup

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and effective operation of your automatic transfer switch. Refer to the internal wiring diagram provided on the unit's cover and consult a qualified electrician.

4.1 Mounting

  1. Select a dry, protected location for mounting the transfer switch, ideally close to your main electrical panel and power sources.
  2. Ensure there is sufficient space for wiring and ventilation.
  3. Securely mount the transfer switch using appropriate fasteners through the designated mounting tabs.

4.2 Wiring Instructions

The transfer switch is designed to handle two 120V AC input sources and one output to your RV's electrical panel. The unit features convenient quick-connect terminals for ease of wiring.

  1. DISCONNECT ALL POWER SOURCES before beginning any wiring.
  2. Identify your two input power sources (e.g., Shore Power, Inverter/Generator) and the output to your RV's main electrical panel.
  3. Route the appropriate gauge wires (rated for 30 Amps, 120V AC) into the transfer switch enclosure through the knockouts.
  4. Connect the Line (Hot), Neutral, and Ground wires from your first power source (e.g., Shore Power) to the designated input terminals.
  5. Connect the Line (Hot), Neutral, and Ground wires from your second power source (e.g., Inverter/Generator) to the designated input terminals.
  6. Connect the Line (Hot), Neutral, and Ground wires from the output terminals of the transfer switch to your RV's main electrical panel.
  7. Ensure all connections are secure and tight. The quick-connect terminals simplify this process.
  8. Verify the wiring against the diagram on the unit's cover.
  9. Once wiring is complete, replace the cover securely.

5. Operation

The QHHR 30 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch operates in an ON-OFF-ON mode, automatically sensing the presence of power from its designated primary source. When the primary source is available, the switch will connect to it. If the primary source is lost, the switch will automatically transfer to the secondary source, provided it is available. When the primary source returns, the switch will automatically revert to the primary source.

  • Automatic Switching: The unit continuously monitors both connected power sources.
  • Source Priority: The transfer switch is typically configured to prioritize one input source (e.g., shore power) over another (e.g., generator/inverter). Refer to your wiring configuration for specific priority.
  • Delay: There may be a brief delay during power transfer to prevent rapid cycling and protect connected appliances.

6. Maintenance

The QHHR 30 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch is designed for minimal maintenance. However, periodic checks can help ensure its longevity and reliable operation.

  • Annual Inspection: Annually, with all power disconnected, open the enclosure and visually inspect all wiring connections for tightness and signs of corrosion or overheating.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the interior of the enclosure free from dust, dirt, and debris.
  • Environmental Check: Ensure the installation environment remains dry and protected from elements.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your QHHR 30 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power to RV Panel:
    • Verify that both input power sources (shore power, generator/inverter) are active and supplying power.
    • Check circuit breakers on all power sources and the RV's main panel.
    • Ensure all wiring connections within the transfer switch are secure.
  • Switch Not Transferring:
    • Confirm that the primary power source is indeed off or unavailable if you expect a transfer to the secondary source.
    • Verify the secondary power source is active and supplying power.
    • Inspect the internal mechanism for any obstructions (after disconnecting all power).
    • Review the wiring diagram to ensure inputs are correctly assigned to the desired priority. Some users have found reversing input wiring resolved unexpected priority behavior.
  • Burning Smell or Overheating:
    • Immediately disconnect all power sources.
    • This indicates a serious electrical issue. Do not attempt to operate the unit. Contact a qualified electrician for inspection and repair or replacement.

If problems persist after troubleshooting, contact customer support or a qualified electrician.
