4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Physical Installation

The smart water meter is designed for inline installation within your cold water supply system. Ensure the flow direction indicated on the meter matches the water flow in your pipes. Proper sealing of all connections is crucial to prevent leaks.

  • Turn off the main water supply.
  • Drain the water from the relevant section of the pipe.
  • Cut the pipe at the desired installation point, ensuring enough space for the meter and its fittings.
  • Install the meter, paying attention to the flow direction arrow on the device. Use appropriate sealing materials (e.g., PTFE tape) on threaded connections.
  • Securely tighten all connections.
  • Slowly turn on the main water supply and check for any leaks.

4.2 Connecting to Tuya Zigbee Hub

This device utilizes Tuya Zigbee technology and requires a Tuya Zigbee Hub for it to function properly and connect to the Tuya application. The Zigbee Hub is not included and must be purchased separately.

  • Ensure your Tuya Zigbee Hub is powered on and connected to your home network.
  • Open the Tuya Smart or Smart Life application on your smartphone.
  • Add a new device in the app and select the Zigbee gateway/hub.
  • Follow the app's instructions to put the Zigbee Hub into pairing mode.
  • Once the hub is in pairing mode, the app should automatically detect the smart water meter. If not, you may need to activate pairing mode on the water meter itself (refer to the meter's specific button functions, usually a long press on the main button).
  • Confirm the device addition in the app and assign it a name and location.

5. Operation

5.1 Digital Display

The water meter features a digital LCD display that shows current measurement data. You can cycle through different display modes by pressing the button on the meter's panel.

5.2 Tuya App Monitoring

The Tuya application provides comprehensive data on your water consumption, charges, and pipeline pressure. This data is collected and stored by the app, offering detailed insights into your water usage patterns.

Screenshot of the Tuya app interface showing water consumption data, including total water consumption, monthly usage, voltage, and temperature. Numbered points indicate different data categories like total consumption, monthly usage, daily/month/total consumption, expense, alarm, and more.

Image 5.2.1: Water Quantity Measurement data displayed in the Tuya App.

  • Total Water Consumption (m³): Displays the cumulative water usage.
  • Water Use This Month (m³): Shows the current month's water consumption.
  • Daily/Monthly/Total Water Consumption: Allows you to view usage history across different timeframes.
  • Expense: Provides estimated cost based on consumption (if configured).
  • Alarm: Access alarm notifications and history.
  • More: Additional settings and data options.

The app allows you to review hourly usage for the past week and daily consumption for the past year, providing a comprehensive usage history. Note that the meter reports cumulative consumption every 12 hours, which is then processed and displayed in the app.

6. Key Features

6.1 Threshold Alarms

The smart water meter is equipped with anomaly detection capabilities. When an abnormality is detected (e.g., pipe burst, leakage, empty pipe), the meter will proactively send an alarm message to the Tuya app. The app will then push notifications to your smartphone, ensuring you are immediately aware of potential issues and can take prompt action.

  • Farms: Monitoring irrigation and livestock water consumption.
  • Shopping Malls: Managing water usage for commercial tenants and common areas.
  • Rental Properties: Accurate billing for individual units.
  • Domestic Use: Personal water consumption tracking and leak detection for homeowners.

7. Maintenance

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check the meter and its connections for any signs of leaks, corrosion, or physical damage.
  • Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the meter with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Check: Monitor the battery level through the Tuya app or the meter's display. Replace batteries as needed (if applicable for your model, typically internal and long-lasting).
  • Software Updates: Ensure your Tuya app and Zigbee Hub firmware are up to date for optimal performance and security.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 Common Issues and Solutions

  • Meter not connecting to Tuya App:
    • Ensure you have a Tuya Zigbee Hub and it is properly connected and online.
    • Verify the Zigbee Hub is in pairing mode when attempting to add the meter.
    • Check if the water meter itself is in pairing mode (refer to section 4.2).
    • Ensure the meter is within range of the Zigbee Hub.
    • Restart both the Zigbee Hub and the Tuya app.
  • Inaccurate or no water consumption data:
    • Check for leaks in the plumbing system, which could affect readings.
    • Verify the meter is installed correctly with the flow direction arrow aligned with water flow.
    • Ensure the meter is securely connected to the Zigbee Hub and reporting data.
    • Note that the meter reports cumulative consumption every 12 hours, which is then processed and displayed in the app. Real-time instantaneous flow should still be visible.
  • Alarm notifications not received:
    • Check your smartphone's notification settings for the Tuya app to ensure they are enabled.
    • Verify the meter is connected and communicating with the Zigbee Hub.
    • Ensure the alarm thresholds are correctly configured in the Tuya app.
  • Low battery warning:
    • If your model has user-replaceable batteries, replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions. For sealed units, contact support if the battery life is unexpectedly short.
