Setup and Installation

This section outlines the general steps for replacing your carburetor. Specific engine configurations may vary slightly. Refer to your mower's service manual for detailed engine disassembly instructions.

  1. Preparation:
    • Ensure the engine is cool.
    • Disconnect the spark plug wire.
    • Turn off the fuel supply valve (if present) or clamp the fuel line.
    • Drain the fuel tank or ensure it is nearly empty to prevent spills.
  2. Remove Air Filter Assembly: Carefully remove the air filter housing and air filter to access the carburetor.
  3. Disconnect Linkages and Fuel Line:
    • Note the position of all linkages (throttle, choke) connected to the old carburetor. Take photos if necessary.
    • Carefully disconnect these linkages.
    • Disconnect the fuel line from the old carburetor. Be prepared for residual fuel to spill.
  4. Remove Old Carburetor: Unbolt the old carburetor from the engine intake manifold. Remove any old gaskets.
  5. Install New Gaskets: Place the appropriate new gaskets in position between the engine, insulator (if present), and the new carburetor. Ensure they are correctly aligned to prevent vacuum leaks.
  6. Install New Carburetor: Mount the new BXparts carburetor onto the engine, securing it with the original bolts. Do not overtighten.
  7. Reconnect Linkages: Reattach the throttle and choke linkages to the new carburetor in their original positions. Verify smooth operation.
  8. Install New Fuel Line and Filter:
    • Replace the old fuel line with the new one provided.
    • Install one of the new fuel filters in-line on the fuel supply hose, ensuring the flow direction arrow (if present) points towards the carburetor.
    • Connect the fuel line to the carburetor.
    • If a new fuel shut-off valve is included, install it in an accessible location on the fuel line.
  9. Reinstall Air Filter Assembly: Reattach the air filter housing and install a clean air filter.
  10. Final Checks:
    • Double-check all connections for tightness.
    • Ensure no tools or debris are left in the engine compartment.
    • Reconnect the spark plug wire.

Operating After Installation

  1. Refuel and Open Fuel Valve: Fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline and open the fuel shut-off valve (if installed). Allow a few minutes for the carburetor bowl to fill.
  2. Start Engine: Follow your mower's standard starting procedure (e.g., set choke, engage throttle, turn key). It may take a few extra cranks for the fuel system to prime completely after a carburetor replacement.
  3. Initial Run: Allow the engine to run for a few minutes to reach operating temperature. Observe for any fuel leaks or unusual engine behavior.
  4. Adjustments (if necessary): Most replacement carburetors are pre-set. If the engine runs rough or stalls, minor idle speed adjustments may be required. Consult your engine's service manual for specific adjustment procedures.

Maintenance

  • Fuel Filter Replacement: The fuel filter should be replaced annually or more frequently if operating in dusty conditions or if fuel contamination is suspected. Use the spare fuel filter provided in the kit.
  • Fuel Line Inspection: Regularly inspect the fuel line for cracks, leaks, or hardening. Replace if any damage is observed.
  • Carburetor Cleaning: If the engine experiences fuel-related issues (e.g., rough running, stalling) after extended use, the carburetor may require cleaning. This typically involves disassembling the carburetor and cleaning jets and passages with carburetor cleaner. This procedure is advanced and should only be performed by experienced individuals.
  • Fuel Quality: Always use fresh, clean gasoline. Stale or contaminated fuel is a primary cause of carburetor issues. Consider using a fuel stabilizer if the mower is stored for extended periods.
