Your Guide to Safe and Efficient Electric Vehicle Charging

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the SEGUMA Level 2 EV Charger. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective installation, operation, and maintenance of your electric vehicle charging equipment. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the product and retain it for future reference.

2. Safety Information

Always adhere to the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the product and your vehicle:

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the NEMA 14-50 outlet is properly installed by a qualified electrician and meets all local electrical codes. Do not use extension cords or adapters other than those specifically designed for EV charging and approved for use with this product.
  • Grounding: The charger must be properly grounded to prevent electric shock. Do not modify the plug or use an ungrounded outlet.
  • Environmental Conditions: The charger is rated IP66 for water and dust resistance, allowing for outdoor use. However, avoid submerging the unit in water or exposing it to extreme weather conditions beyond its operating range (-22°F to +122°F).
  • Physical Damage: Do not use the charger if the cable, plug, or control box is damaged. Contact customer support immediately. Avoid driving over the cable or subjecting it to excessive force.
  • Children and Pets: Keep the charger and cables out of reach of children and pets during operation and storage.

4.2 Components

  • Control Box: Houses the intelligent display, control buttons, and safety circuitry.
  • J1772 Connector: The vehicle-side plug, compatible with most EVs. Features a lock design and durable, flame-retardant materials.
  • NEMA 14-50 Plug: The wall-side plug for connecting to a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet.
  • Charging Cable: A 25-foot UL-listed copper cable with TPE insulation, designed for durability and flexibility.

4.3 Display and LED Indicators

The 2.4-inch TFT screen provides detailed charging information. The LED indicator on the control box offers a quick visual status:

5. Setup

5.1 Wall Mounting (Optional)

The charger can be wall-mounted for convenience. Use the provided control box holder and charger cable holder.

  1. Mark Position: Choose a suitable location near your NEMA 14-50 outlet, ensuring the cable can comfortably reach your vehicle. Use the mounting template (if provided) or the holders themselves to mark drilling points.
  2. Install Anchors: Drill holes and insert wall anchors appropriate for your wall type.
  3. Fix Holders: Secure the control box holder and charger cable holder to the wall using the provided screws.
  4. Place Charger: Mount the control box onto its holder and coil the cable onto the cable holder.

5.2 Outlet Compatibility

This charger is designed for use with a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Ensure your electrical system supports this outlet type. If you have a different outlet, an appropriate adapter may be required, but it is recommended to consult a qualified electrician for proper installation.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Basic Charging Steps

  1. Plug into Outlet: Insert the NEMA 14-50 plug firmly into the compatible wall outlet. The charger will power on, and the LED indicator will show a blue solid light (Standing by).
  2. Connect to Vehicle: Open your vehicle's charging port and firmly insert the J1772 connector. The LED indicator will flash blue (EV Connected).
  3. Start Charging: The charger will automatically begin charging, and the LED indicator will flash green (Charging). The TFT screen will display real-time charging data.
  4. Charging Complete: Once your vehicle is fully charged, the charger will automatically stop, and the LED indicator will turn solid green (Fully charged).
  5. Disconnect: Disconnect the J1772 connector from your vehicle, then unplug the NEMA 14-50 plug from the wall outlet.

6.2 Adjusting Charging Current

To adjust the charging current, press the 'A' button on the control box. Each press cycles through available current options (10A, 16A, 20A, 24A, 32A, 40A). Select the appropriate current based on your vehicle's requirements and your home's electrical circuit capacity.

6.3 Setting Timing Delay

To set a charging delay, press the clock button on the control box. You can set a delay from 1 to 12 hours. This feature allows you to schedule charging during off-peak electricity hours to reduce costs.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the control box and cables with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the charger is unplugged before cleaning.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the cable, plug, and connector for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. If any damage is found, discontinue use and contact customer support.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the charger in its carry bag in a dry, clean place. Avoid coiling the cable too tightly.

8. Troubleshooting

Refer to the LED indicator status (Figure 4.4) for initial diagnosis. If the issue persists, try the following:

  • Charger Not Powering On: Ensure the NEMA 14-50 plug is fully inserted into a live outlet. Check your home's circuit breaker.
  • Charging Not Starting: Verify the J1772 connector is securely plugged into the vehicle's charging port. Check the vehicle's charging settings. Ensure the current setting on the charger is appropriate.
  • Ground Fault (Red Flashing LED): Unplug the charger from the wall and the vehicle. Wait a few minutes, then plug it back in. If the fault persists, there may be an issue with your electrical system; consult an electrician.
  • General Fault (Red Solid LED): Disconnect the charger from both the vehicle and the power outlet. Wait for 5 minutes, then reconnect. If the fault remains, contact customer support.
  • Slow Charging: Check the current setting on the charger. Ensure it is set to the desired amperage. Verify your vehicle's charging capacity.
