3. Setup

Before first use, proper setup is crucial for safe and optimal performance.

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

  • Carefully remove the generator and all accessories from the packaging.
  • Inspect for any shipping damage. Contact your dealer if damage is found.
  • Verify all included components are present: instruction manual, gas hose with pressure regulators, spark plug wrench, oil filling funnel, parallel connection cable, Schuko plug, PH2 screwdriver, battery charging terminals.

3.2 Adding Engine Oil

Important: The generator is shipped without engine oil. Failure to add oil before starting will cause severe engine damage.

  1. Place the generator on a level surface.
  2. Locate the oil filler cap/dipstick.
  3. Using the provided funnel, add 0.45 liters of recommended engine oil (10W-30 or 10W-40).
  4. Check the oil level with the dipstick; it should be at the MAX mark. Do not overfill.
  5. Securely replace the oil filler cap.

3.3 Adding Fuel (Petrol)

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool.
  2. Open the fuel tank cap.
  3. Fill the tank with unleaded petrol with an octane number of 91-95. Do not overfill.
  4. Securely close the fuel tank cap.

3.4 Connecting LPG (Propane-Butane)

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool.
  2. Connect the provided gas hose with pressure regulators to a gas bottle according to DIN 477 standards.
  3. Connect the other end of the gas hose to the LPG inlet on the generator.
  4. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent gas leaks.
  5. Slowly open the valve on the gas bottle.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Starting the Generator

  1. Fuel Selection: Turn the fuel selector switch to either 'Petrol' or 'LPG'.
  2. Engine Switch: Set the engine switch to 'ON'.
  3. Choke: If starting a cold engine, move the choke lever to the 'CHOKE' position. For a warm engine, set it to 'RUN'.
  4. Pull Start: Firmly pull the recoil starter handle until the engine starts.
  5. Choke Adjustment: Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke lever to the 'RUN' position.
  6. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before connecting electrical loads.

4.2 ECO Mode

  • Activate ECO mode by pressing the 'ECO' button on the control panel.
  • In ECO mode, the engine speed automatically adjusts to the connected load, reducing fuel consumption and noise.
  • Deactivate ECO mode for full power output or when connecting devices with high starting current.

4.3 Parallel Connection

To double the power output, two identical KS 3100iG S generators can be connected in parallel using a Könner & Söhnen KS PU1 parallel switch box (sold separately).

  1. Ensure both generators are off and cool.
  2. Connect the parallel connection cable (included) between the two generators and to the KS PU1 switch box according to the switch box instructions.
  3. Start both generators individually.
  4. Once both are running stably, connect your electrical loads to the outlets on the KS PU1 switch box.

4.4 Connecting Electrical Devices

  • Connect your 230V devices to the Schuko socket.
  • Connect USB-powered devices to the 5V/1A or 5V/2.1A USB ports.
  • Do not exceed the generator's rated power output (2.8 kW nominal, 3.1 kW maximum).

4.5 Stopping the Generator

  1. Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator.
  2. If operating on LPG, close the valve on the gas bottle first and allow the engine to run until it consumes the remaining gas in the line and stops.
  3. Set the engine switch to 'OFF'.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your generator.

5.1 Daily Checks (Before Each Use)

  • Check engine oil level and top up if necessary.
  • Inspect the air filter for dirt and debris. Clean or replace if needed.
  • Check fuel levels (petrol or LPG).
  • Inspect for any visible leaks (fuel, oil).

5.2 Engine Oil Change

Change the engine oil after the first 20 hours of operation, then every 50-100 hours or annually, whichever comes first.

  1. Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil.
  2. Turn off the engine and place a drain pan beneath the oil drain plug.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug and oil filler cap to allow the oil to drain completely.
  4. Reinstall the drain plug and refill with 0.45 liters of recommended oil (10W-30 or 10W-40).
  5. Check the oil level and replace the filler cap.

5.3 Spark Plug Maintenance

Inspect the spark plug every 100 hours or annually. Clean or replace as needed.

  • Remove the spark plug cap and use the provided spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug.
  • Inspect for carbon deposits or wear. Clean with a wire brush or replace if necessary.
  • Ensure the spark plug gap is correct (refer to specifications).
  • Reinstall the spark plug and cap.

5.4 Storage

For long-term storage, prepare the generator as follows:

  • Drain the fuel tank and carburetor of petrol, or disconnect the LPG tank.
  • Change the engine oil.
  • Remove the spark plug and pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the recoil starter a few times to distribute the oil, then reinstall the spark plug.
  • Clean the exterior of the generator.
  • Store in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your generator.

6.1 Engine Will Not Start

  • No Fuel: Check petrol or LPG levels.
  • Engine Switch OFF: Ensure the engine switch is in the 'ON' position.
  • Choke Position: Adjust choke for cold or warm start.
  • Low Oil: Check oil level. The generator has low oil protection and will not start if oil is insufficient.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect spark plug for fouling or damage.

6.2 No Power Output

  • Overload: Disconnect all loads. The generator has overload protection. Press the 'AC RESET' button on the control panel to restore power.
  • Short Circuit: Check connected devices for short circuits.
  • Circuit Breaker: Check if any circuit breakers have tripped.

6.3 Engine Stops During Operation

  • Out of Fuel: Refuel with petrol or replace LPG tank.
  • Low Oil: Check and add engine oil.
  • Overload: Reduce connected load.
  • Overheating: Ensure proper ventilation and clear any obstructions from cooling vents.
