1. Important Safety Information

DANGER: HIGHLY CAUSTIC MATERIAL. CAUSES SEVERE BURNS. MAY BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED.

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) is a powerful chemical that requires extreme caution during handling and use. Failure to follow these safety instructions can result in severe injury or death.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Eye Protection: Always wear chemical splash goggles and/or a full face shield.
  • Hand Protection: Always wear chemical-resistant gloves (e.g., neoprene, butyl rubber, or PVC).
  • Body Protection: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and chemical-resistant aprons or suits.
  • Foot Protection: Wear chemical-resistant safety shoes or boots.

General Safety Precautions

  • Ventilation: Use in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Avoid inhaling dust or fumes.
  • Mixing: Always add Sodium Hydroxide slowly to water, never water to Sodium Hydroxide. This generates significant heat and can cause splashing.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from acids, metals, and organic materials. Keep container tightly closed and secured.
  • Child Safety: Keep out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the child safety cap is securely fastened.
  • Emergency Equipment: Have an eyewash station and safety shower readily available.
  • First Aid: In case of contact, immediately flush affected area with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Disposal: Dispose of according to local, state, and federal regulations.

Do NOT use with aluminum, galvanized steel, or other reactive metals as this can produce flammable hydrogen gas.

Do NOT mix with other drain cleaners or chemicals.

4. Preparation for Use

Before using iDrain Sodium Hydroxide, ensure you have completed the following steps:

  1. Read Safety Information: Thoroughly review Section 1: Important Safety Information.
  2. Gather PPE: Ensure all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (chemical splash goggles, face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, long-sleeved clothing, chemical-resistant apron, safety shoes) is readily available and worn correctly.
  3. Ensure Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors.
  4. Clear Area: Remove any unnecessary items, especially children and pets, from the work area.
  5. Prepare Water (if dissolving): If preparing a solution, have the required amount of cold water ready in a heat-resistant container.

5. Operating Instructions (Application)

Always wear full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as described in Section 1 before proceeding with any application.

5.1. For Blocked Drains (Kitchen & Bathroom Sinks/Pipes)

  1. Ensure the drain is free of standing water. If not, remove as much water as possible.
  2. Carefully pour 1 cup of iDrain Sodium Hydroxide flakes directly into the blocked drain opening.
  3. Allow the product to sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour. For severe blockages, allow more time, but do not exceed 3 hours.
  4. Slowly and carefully flush the drain with a large amount of cold water.
  5. If the blockage persists, repeat the process. Do not exceed two applications. If the drain remains blocked, consult a professional plumber.

Caution: Do not use in drains connected to garbage disposals or in toilets. Avoid contact with chrome, painted surfaces, or acrylic. Test on an inconspicuous area first if unsure.

5.2. For Grease Trap Maintenance

  1. Determine the recommended maintenance dose based on the size and usage of your grease trap system. Consult a professional if unsure.
  2. Carefully add the measured dose of iDrain Sodium Hydroxide flakes to the grease trap.
  3. Allow the product to work overnight or for several hours, depending on the system's requirements.
  4. Flush the system with water as recommended by your grease trap maintenance schedule.

Note: Regular application helps prevent buildup and reduces the frequency of professional pumping.

5.3. For Septic Tank Maintenance

  1. Add 1 pound of iDrain Sodium Hydroxide per 1,000 gallons of septic tank capacity.
  2. Distribute the flakes evenly into the septic tank access point.
  3. Apply monthly or as needed to prevent the buildup of grease and solid waste.

Important: Always ensure proper ventilation and avoid direct contact with the septic tank contents.

5.4. For Soap Making

iDrain Sodium Hydroxide is suitable for cold process soap making. Always follow a tested and reliable soap recipe that specifies the exact amount of lye needed for your chosen oils and water content.

  1. Measure Precisely: Accurately weigh the Sodium Hydroxide flakes and water according to your recipe using a digital scale.
  2. Prepare Lye Solution: In a well-ventilated area, slowly and carefully add the measured Sodium Hydroxide flakes to the measured cold water. NEVER add water to lye. Stir gently until dissolved. The solution will become very hot.
  3. Cool Solution: Allow the lye solution to cool to the temperature specified in your soap recipe before combining with oils.
  4. Follow Recipe: Proceed with your soap making recipe, combining the lye solution with oils at the appropriate temperatures and mixing until trace is achieved.

Warning: The lye solution is extremely corrosive. Ensure no skin or eye contact. Work in an area where spills can be easily contained and cleaned.

6. Care and Maintenance

6.1. Storage

  • Store in the original, tightly sealed container.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Store away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture.
  • Ensure the child safety cap is securely fastened.
  • Keep separate from acids, aluminum, galvanized metals, and organic materials.
  • Store in a location inaccessible to children and pets.

6.2. Spill and Leak Procedures

  • Immediately don full PPE.
  • Contain the spill using inert absorbent material (e.g., sand, vermiculite). Do not use combustible materials.
  • Neutralize with a weak acid (e.g., vinegar) if appropriate and safe to do so, then absorb.
  • Collect spilled material and place in a suitable, labeled container for disposal.
  • Clean the affected area thoroughly with water.

6.3. Disposal

Dispose of unused product and contaminated materials in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations. Do not dispose of down drains or into waterways unless specifically permitted by regulations.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1. Drain Opener Not Effective

  • Check Application: Ensure the correct amount was used and allowed sufficient time to work.
  • Repeat Application: A second application may be necessary for stubborn clogs. Do not exceed two applications.
  • Type of Blockage: Sodium Hydroxide is most effective on organic blockages (grease, hair, soap scum). It may not be effective on inorganic materials or solid objects.
  • Professional Help: If the drain remains blocked after two applications, the blockage may be severe or of a type that requires professional plumbing intervention.

7.2. Accidental Skin or Eye Contact

  • Skin: Immediately flush the affected area with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Seek immediate medical attention.

7.3. Ingestion

  • Do NOT induce vomiting.
  • Rinse mouth with water.
  • Give several glasses of water or milk to drink.
  • Seek immediate medical attention. Call a Poison Control Center.
