The HI 98308 features a clear LCD display, a durable body, and a sensitive electrode system. The graphite electrodes minimize polarization effects, ensuring stable and reliable measurements. The exposed temperature probe allows for rapid temperature compensation, crucial for accurate conductivity readings.

Setup

1. Battery Installation

Locate the battery compartment on the back of the tester. Open the compartment cover and insert the provided battery, ensuring correct polarity. Close the cover securely.

2. Initial Calibration

The HI 98308 requires manual calibration to a single point for optimal accuracy. Refer to the included quick start guide for detailed instructions on performing this initial calibration using the reagent starter kit. Typically, this involves immersing the electrode in a known standard solution and adjusting the reading using the calibration screw (as shown in Figure 2) until it matches the standard's value.

Operating Instructions

1. Preparing for Measurement

  • Ensure the tester is clean and dry before use.
  • Remove the protective cap from the electrode.
  • Turn on the tester using the power button.

2. Taking a Measurement

  • Immerse the electrode into the pure water sample you wish to test. Ensure the electrodes are fully submerged.
  • Gently stir the sample to remove any air bubbles that may be trapped around the electrode.
  • Allow the reading on the display to stabilize. The HI 98308 provides readings in microsiemens per centimeter (µS/cm), with a very low range of 0.0 to 99.9 µS/cm, ideal for pure water.
  • Record the stable reading.

3. After Measurement

  • Rinse the electrode thoroughly with distilled or deionized water to prevent contamination.
  • Shake off excess water and replace the protective cap.
  • Turn off the tester to conserve battery life.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Electrode

Regular cleaning of the graphite electrodes is crucial for accurate measurements. If readings become erratic or slow to stabilize, clean the electrode by soaking it in a mild cleaning solution (e.g., Hanna HI7061 general purpose cleaning solution) for 15-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with distilled water. Never use abrasive materials to clean the electrodes.

Storage

Always store the tester with the protective cap securely in place. For long-term storage, ensure the electrode is clean and dry, and consider removing the battery to prevent leakage.

Troubleshooting

  • No Display/Unit Not Turning On: Check battery installation and ensure the battery has sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
  • Erratic or Unstable Readings:
    • Ensure the electrode is fully submerged and free of air bubbles.
    • Clean the electrode as described in the Maintenance section.
    • Recalibrate the tester.
  • Incorrect Readings:
    • Verify that the calibration was performed correctly using a fresh standard solution.
    • Ensure the sample temperature is within the operating range of the device.
