Operating Instructions
Turning On/Off
- To turn on the meter, press the ON/OFF button.
- To turn off the meter, press and hold the ON/OFF button until the display turns off.
Taking Measurements
- Ensure the electrode is clean and conditioned.
- Immerse the electrode tip into the sample solution, ensuring the liquid level is above the sensor junction.
- Allow a few moments for the reading to stabilize. The display will show pH, ORP (mV), and temperature readings simultaneously.
- Press the MODE button to cycle through different display modes if available (e.g., showing only pH, ORP, or temperature).
- Press the SET/HOLD button to hold the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
Temperature Compensation
The HI98121 features automatic temperature compensation (ATC) for pH readings, ensuring accuracy across varying sample temperatures. The integrated temperature sensor automatically adjusts the pH measurement based on the sample's temperature.
Calibration
Regular calibration is crucial for maintaining the accuracy of your HI98121 tester. The device supports automatic two-point pH calibration.
pH Calibration
- Prepare two fresh pH buffer solutions (e.g., pH 7.01 and pH 4.01 or pH 10.01).
- Turn on the meter.
- Rinse the electrode with distilled water and blot dry.
- Immerse the electrode into the first pH buffer solution (e.g., pH 7.01).
- Press and hold the CAL button (if available, or refer to quick start guide for specific button sequence for calibration) until "CAL" appears on the display. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer.
- Once the first point is calibrated, rinse the electrode and immerse it into the second pH buffer solution.
- The meter will automatically complete the two-point calibration.
- Exit calibration mode (refer to quick start guide for specific button sequence).
Note: ORP calibration is typically not required for standard ORP meters as they measure relative potential. If specific ORP calibration is needed, consult the detailed instruction manual provided with the product.
Maintenance
Electrode Cleaning and Storage
- After each use, rinse the electrode thoroughly with distilled or deionized water to prevent sample residue buildup.
- For stubborn deposits, use a mild cleaning solution specifically designed for pH/ORP electrodes. Avoid abrasive materials.
- Always store the electrode with its protective cap filled with storage solution (or pH 7 buffer if storage solution is unavailable). Never store in distilled water.
Battery Replacement
When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the battery promptly to ensure accurate readings. Follow the battery installation steps outlined in the "Setup" section.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display / Meter won't turn on | Dead battery; Incorrect battery installation | Replace battery; Check battery polarity |
| Unstable readings | Dirty electrode; Air bubbles around sensor; Electrode not immersed deep enough; Expired buffer solutions | Clean electrode; Gently tap meter to dislodge bubbles; Ensure proper immersion; Use fresh buffer solutions |
| Inaccurate pH readings | Needs calibration; Electrode dry or damaged; Contaminated buffer solutions | Perform two-point calibration; Rehydrate electrode in storage solution; Use fresh buffer solutions; Replace electrode if damaged |
| "Err" or error message on display | Calibration error; Sensor malfunction | Repeat calibration carefully; Contact customer support if error persists |
