3. Setup & Installation

3.1 Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Verify electrical requirements: 120 Volts (AC), 1500 Watts. Recommended circuit breaker: 15 AMP.
  • Ensure water connection is 3/4" NPT.
  • Confirm maximum water pressure does not exceed 150 PSI.
  • Select a suitable installation location (floor/shelf mount) with adequate space and drainage.

3.2 Installation Steps

  1. Mounting: Place the water heater on a stable, level surface. It can be installed independently or as a booster in-line with a larger hot water source.
  2. Water Connections: Connect the cold water inlet (blue) and hot water outlet (red) to your plumbing system using 3/4" NPT connections. Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free.
  3. T&P Valve Installation: Install the provided ASME, ANSI, and CSA (AGA) approved Temperature & Pressure relief valve into the designated port on the top of the unit. Route the discharge pipe from the T&P valve to an appropriate drain, ensuring it is free of obstructions and slopes downward.
  4. Filling the Tank: Before connecting electricity, open a hot water faucet in your home to allow air to escape. Then, open the cold water supply valve to the water heater to fill the tank. Once water flows steadily from the hot water faucet, the tank is full. Close the hot water faucet.
  5. Electrical Connection: Connect the water heater to a dedicated 120V, 15A circuit. Ensure proper grounding. Refer to local electrical codes for specific wiring requirements.

3.3 Electrical Connection Details

The water heater requires a hardwired connection. Ensure the power supply is disconnected at the circuit breaker before making any electrical connections. The unit is designed for 120V, 1500W operation.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Initial Startup

  1. Ensure the tank is completely filled with water before turning on the power.
  2. Turn on the electrical power to the water heater at the circuit breaker.
  3. The water heater will begin heating the water to the set temperature.

4.2 Temperature Adjustment

The water heater's temperature can be adjusted using the built-in thermostat, located behind the access panel. The factory preset temperature is 125°F (52°C), but it can be adjusted within a range of 90°F (32°C) to 150°F (66°C).

  1. WARNING: Before changing the temperature setting, disconnect power to the water heater at the circuit breaker. Water temperatures over 125°F can cause severe burns instantly or death from scalds.
  2. Carefully remove the access panel to expose the thermostat.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver to adjust the temperature dial to your desired setting.
  4. Replace the access panel securely.
  5. Restore power to the water heater.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and efficient operation of your ThermoMate water heater.

  • Annual Draining: To prevent sediment buildup, drain the water heater annually. Disconnect power, close the cold water inlet valve, connect a hose to the independent drain port, and open the drain valve. Open a hot water faucet to allow air into the tank for faster draining.
  • Anode Rod Inspection: The anode rod protects the tank from corrosion. Inspect and replace the anode rod every 3-5 years, or more frequently in areas with hard water. This can be accessed via the top of the unit.
  • T&P Valve Testing: Test the Temperature & Pressure relief valve at least once a year by lifting the lever. Water should discharge from the drain pipe. If no water discharges, or if it continues to drip, replace the valve immediately.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the water heater with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
