Intellitron MA-1901 Dual-Band Glassmount Antenna Instruction Manual

Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Intellitron MA-1901 Dual-Band Glassmount Antenna. This antenna is designed for reliable communication across two distinct frequency bands, offering a convenient and discreet mounting solution for various applications.

Product Overview

The Intellitron MA-1901 is a dual-band glassmount antenna engineered for optimal performance within the 144-148 MHz and 430-450 MHz frequency ranges. It supports a maximum power output of 50 watts and includes a 12-foot coaxial cable terminated with a PL-259 connector for easy integration with compatible radio equipment. The antenna's design allows for mounting on glass surfaces, providing a clean installation without requiring drilling into the vehicle body.

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal antenna performance. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Select Mounting Location: Choose a clean, flat, and non-tinted glass surface on your vehicle. The center of the rear window is often ideal. Ensure there are no obstructions or metal objects near the mounting area that could interfere with the signal.
  2. Clean Surface: Thoroughly clean both the inside and outside of the chosen glass area with a glass cleaner. Allow it to dry completely.
  3. Attach External Base: Peel the protective backing from the adhesive on the external glassmount base. Carefully align and press the external base firmly onto the outside of the glass. Apply pressure for at least 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond.
  4. Attach Internal Base: Align the internal glassmount base with the external base on the inside of the glass. Ensure the coaxial cable can be routed without kinks or excessive tension. Peel the protective backing and press the internal base firmly onto the glass, aligning it precisely with the external base.
  5. Connect Antenna Whip: Screw the antenna whip onto the internal glassmount base. Hand-tighten only.
  6. Connect Coaxial Cable: Route the 12ft coaxial cable from the internal base to your radio equipment. Ensure the cable is secured and not exposed to sharp edges or excessive heat. Connect the PL-259 connector to the antenna input on your radio.
  7. Install Counterpoise: The 6-inch counterpoise wire is essential for tuning and performance. Attach it to the designated terminal on the internal glassmount base. Ensure it is extended freely and not touching other metal surfaces.
  8. Tuning (SWR Check): After installation, it is highly recommended to check the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) using an SWR meter. Adjustments to the antenna whip length (if applicable, using the hex key) may be necessary to achieve the lowest SWR for both frequency bands. Consult your radio's manual for SWR measurement procedures.

Note: Avoid mounting the antenna on tinted windows with metallic films, as this can significantly degrade performance.

Operation

Once installed and tuned, the Intellitron MA-1901 antenna is ready for use with your dual-band radio. This antenna operates effectively on both the 144-148 MHz (VHF) and 430-450 MHz (UHF) bands.

  • Frequency Bands: Ensure your radio is set to transmit and receive within the antenna's specified frequency ranges.
  • Power Output: Do not exceed the maximum power rating of 50 watts. Exceeding this limit can damage the antenna and/or your radio.
  • SWR Monitoring: Periodically check your SWR, especially if you notice a decrease in performance or if the antenna has been subjected to physical stress.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance can be affected by environmental conditions such as heavy rain, snow, or nearby large metallic structures.

Maintenance

The Intellitron MA-1901 antenna requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.

  • Cleaning: Keep the antenna whip and glassmount bases clean. Use a soft cloth and mild soap or glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the antenna or glass.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the antenna for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the plastic, bent whip, or frayed coaxial cable. Check the adhesive bond of the glassmount bases.
  • Cable Management: Ensure the coaxial cable remains securely routed and free from kinks or excessive bending, which can degrade signal quality.
  • Connector Check: Periodically verify that the PL-259 connector is securely tightened to your radio.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Intellitron MA-1901 antenna, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Poor Signal / High SWR:
    • Verify the antenna is properly tuned (SWR check).
    • Check all cable connections for tightness and proper seating.
    • Ensure the counterpoise wire is correctly installed and extended.
    • Inspect the coaxial cable for damage (cuts, pinches).
    • Confirm the mounting location is free from metallic obstructions or metallic window tint.
  • Antenna Detachment:
    • Ensure the glass surface was thoroughly cleaned and dry before installation.
    • Apply firm, consistent pressure during installation to activate the adhesive.
    • If detachment occurs, clean the area and use the included glass remount kit or a suitable automotive-grade adhesive.
  • No Transmission/Reception:
    • Confirm your radio is powered on and functioning correctly.
    • Check the radio's antenna port connection.
    • Test with a known working antenna if available to isolate the issue.

If problems persist after performing these checks, consult a qualified radio technician.
