Setup

1. Battery Installation

The MT-556 recorder requires two AAA batteries for operation. Ensure correct polarity when inserting the batteries.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Slide the cover open.
  3. Insert two AAA batteries, matching the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

2. Initial Power On

After installing batteries, slide the power switch (often combined with the HOLD switch) to the 'ON' position. The LCD screen should light up.

3. Connecting to a Computer (USB)

The MT-556 can be connected to a computer via its USB interface to transfer recorded files or use it as a portable storage device.

  1. Ensure the recorder is powered on.
  2. Connect one end of the provided USB cable to the recorder's USB port.
  3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your computer.
  4. The recorder should be recognized as a removable disk (similar to a pen drive). You can then access your recorded files (WMA, MP3) or store other data.
  5. Note for Windows 10 users: Some users have reported difficulty connecting to Windows 10. If you encounter issues, try connecting to a different USB port, restarting the computer, or ensuring the device is not in 'HOLD' mode. It may be recognized more easily on older Windows versions like Windows 7.

Operating Instructions

1. Basic Recording

  1. Ensure the recorder is powered on and not in 'HOLD' mode.
  2. Press the REC button (usually red or marked with a red dot) to start recording. The recording indicator on the LCD screen will activate.
  3. To pause recording, press the PLAY/PAUSE button. Press it again to resume.
  4. To stop recording, press the STOP button. The recorded file will be saved automatically.

2. Playback

  1. In stop mode, use the UP and DOWN buttons to navigate through your recorded files.
  2. Press the PLAY/PAUSE button to start playback of the selected file.
  3. Press PLAY/PAUSE again to pause playback.
  4. Press the STOP button to stop playback.

3. Volume Control

During playback, use the VOL+ button to increase volume and the VOL- button to decrease volume.

4. Mode Selection (MP3 Player Function)

The MT-556 can also function as an MP3 player. Press the MODE button to switch between recording mode and MP3 playback mode. In MP3 mode, you can play music files stored on the device.

5. Voice Operated Recording (VOR)

The VOR function allows the recorder to automatically start recording when sound is detected and pause when there is silence, saving memory and battery life. Refer to the detailed user manual (included in the package) for specific instructions on enabling and adjusting VOR sensitivity.

6. Using the Lapel Microphone

For enhanced audio capture, especially in interviews or presentations, connect the included lapel microphone to the MIC input jack on the recorder. Ensure the microphone is securely plugged in before starting a recording.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the device. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the recorder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Care: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the LCD. Always use fresh AAA batteries.
  • Data Backup: Regularly back up important recordings to your computer to prevent data loss.

Troubleshooting

Device freezes or becomes unresponsive.
  • Remove and reinsert batteries to perform a hard reset.
