Model: ERAX 101003104 (#6/7/8)

1. Introduction

The Delphin ERAX Fly Fishing Reel is a full-metal reel designed for fly fishing. It features a wide, elevated spool for optimal line placement and a matte black finish to prevent glare. The reel incorporates a sensitive, concealed drag system resistant to sand and dirt, ensuring reliable performance even when submerged. Its perforated body design contributes to a lighter weight and accelerates the drying of the fly line and backing, helping to prevent damage to your equipment.

2. Setup

2.1 Attaching the Reel to the Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fly rod.
  2. Tighten the locking rings on the reel seat to secure the reel firmly in place. Ensure there is no wobble.

2.2 Spooling the Line

The ERAX reel is designed with a wide spool to accommodate backing, fly line, and leader efficiently. It is ambidextrous, allowing for left or right-hand retrieve setup.

  1. Backing: Tie the backing line to the spool arbor using an arbor knot. Wind the specified amount of backing onto the spool evenly.
  2. Fly Line: Connect the fly line to the backing using a strong knot suitable for fly lines (e.g., Albright knot). Wind the fly line onto the spool, ensuring it lays flat and even.
  3. Leader: Attach your leader to the fly line using a loop-to-loop connection or a nail knot.

3. Operating the Reel

3.1 Drag System Adjustment

The ERAX reel features a sensitive, concealed drag system. This system is designed to prevent unwanted line unwinding during fast strikes and to resist sand and dirt intrusion.

  • To adjust the drag, locate the drag knob on the side of the reel.
  • Turn the knob clockwise to increase drag tension, making it harder for the line to pull out.
  • Turn the knob counter-clockwise to decrease drag tension, allowing the line to pull out more easily.
  • Always set the drag appropriate for your tippet strength and the size of fish you are targeting.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Delphin ERAX reel.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater or dirty conditions, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Drying: The reel's perforated body is designed to accelerate the drying of the fly line and backing. After rinsing, allow the reel to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area before storage. This prevents mildew and corrosion.
  • Drag System: The concealed drag system is resistant to sand and dirt. However, if you notice any issues with drag performance, gently rinse the area around the drag knob with fresh water. Avoid disassembling the drag system unless you are experienced in reel maintenance.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts, such as the handle shaft, as recommended by general fishing reel maintenance practices. Avoid over-lubrication.
  • Storage: Store the reel in a dry, cool place, ideally in a protective reel case or pouch to prevent scratches and impacts.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Line Tangles: Ensure your line is spooled evenly and not overfilled. Check for any burrs or rough spots on the reel that might snag the line. The reel's percussion system is designed to minimize tangles during fast strikes.
  • Drag Not Functioning Smoothly: Rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water, paying attention to the drag system area. Ensure no sand or debris is interfering with the mechanism. If the issue persists, verify the drag knob is correctly engaged and adjusted.
  • Reel Sticking/Grinding: Clean the reel thoroughly. Check for any foreign objects or damage. Light lubrication of moving parts may resolve minor sticking.
