Safety Information

  • Do not paint the smoke detector. Paint can clog the smoke sensing chambers and prevent the unit from functioning correctly.
  • Do not block the smoke inlet. Ensure the detector's vents are clear of obstructions.
  • Test the detector regularly, at least once a week, to ensure proper operation.
  • Do not install in areas with high humidity (e.g., bathrooms), extreme temperatures, or excessive dust, as these conditions can lead to false alarms or malfunction.
  • The battery is sealed and non-replaceable. Do not attempt to open the unit or replace the battery. Tampering with the device may void the warranty and compromise safety.
  • An alarm indicates the presence of smoke. Evacuate immediately and call emergency services. Do not assume it is a false alarm without verifying.

Setup and Installation

1. Choosing a Location

Proper placement is crucial for effective smoke detection. Follow these guidelines:

  • Install at least one smoke detector on each floor of your home, including basements and attics.
  • Place detectors in hallways, near sleeping areas, and in living rooms.
  • For optimal protection, consider installing a detector in each bedroom.
  • Avoid installing detectors in or near kitchens, bathrooms, garages, or areas near heating/cooling vents, fans, or fireplaces, as these can cause nuisance alarms.
  • Mount the detector on the ceiling, at least 10 cm (4 inches) from any wall.
  • For sloped ceilings, install the detector within 90 cm (3 feet) of the highest point.

2. Mounting the Detector

The SECAIR ZR170S offers two installation methods:

Screw Installation:
  1. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark two drilling points on the ceiling.
  2. Drill holes at the marked points and insert the provided anchors.
  3. Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling using the provided screws.
  4. Align the smoke detector with the mounting bracket and twist it clockwise until it clicks securely into place.
Adhesive Pad Installation:
  1. Ensure the ceiling surface is clean, dry, and smooth.
  2. Peel off the protective film from the adhesive pad and firmly press it onto the back of the smoke detector.
  3. Press the detector firmly onto the desired ceiling location for at least 30 seconds to ensure strong adhesion.

3. Activation

The detector activates automatically once it is properly attached to the mounting bracket (for screw installation) or firmly pressed onto the ceiling (for adhesive installation). A short beep and a single flash of the red LED will confirm successful activation.

Operating Instructions

1. Normal Operation

During normal operation, the red LED indicator will flash approximately every 60 seconds. This indicates that the detector is powered on and functioning correctly.

2. Testing the Alarm

It is recommended to test your smoke detector weekly to ensure it is working properly.

  1. Press and hold the "Test/Mute" button on the detector for a few seconds.
  2. The alarm will sound loudly (85dB) and the red LED will flash rapidly.
  3. Release the button to stop the test.

3. Mute Function

In case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking fumes or steam), you can temporarily silence the alarm:

  • Press the "Test/Mute" button once.
  • The alarm will silence for approximately 10 minutes. The red LED will continue to flash every 10 seconds during the mute period.
  • The detector will automatically reset after the mute period if smoke is no longer present. If smoke persists, the alarm will reactivate.

Maintenance

1. Regular Testing

Test the smoke detector weekly by pressing the "Test/Mute" button to ensure its alarm and circuitry are functioning correctly.

2. Cleaning

Dust and debris can accumulate in the smoke sensing chamber and affect performance. Clean the detector at least once a month:

  • Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to gently remove dust from the vents and around the detector.
  • Do not use water, cleaning agents, or solvents, as these can damage the unit.

3. Battery

The SECAIR ZR170S is equipped with a built-in, non-replaceable lithium battery designed to last for 10 years. When the battery is nearing its end of life, the detector will emit a short beep approximately every 40-60 seconds, and the LED will flash. When this occurs, the entire smoke detector unit must be replaced immediately.
